Probably the first thing to do is to take a look around the engine and see if you see any oil on the engine.

Do you seee any oil dropping on the ground?

I had a gasket leak on the intake manifold that caused oil to run down onto the rest of the engine. It would then start burning and smoke would come out from under the hood. Only a few drops hit the ground since most of it was burning. It cost about $450 for parts and labor to have it fixed.

So, basically calm down, and find out if there is an oil leak and where it's coming from. Then go from there.

Burning oil and smoke

Depending on how much oil you're losing, you may not need a new engine. I recently had similar symptoms and took my 93 touring to Advanced Import Motorsport (www.aimindy.com) in Indianapolis. The tech said I had a lot of the typical leaks with an 80,000 mile motor, mainly just O-rings around the oil filler tube and stuff like that. These parts are inexpensive, but hard to replace. I had a half dozen replaced, a new fuel filter, and a new rear axle seal done for about 600 bucks. When they had finished, they called to tell me there was still a very small leak, either the rear main engine seal or the oil pan. Either way, the motor has to be lifted, so it's expensive. Now, I get a couple little drips, but oil consumption is very low and there is no burning smell. They said not to worry about either until I was ready to have it done, they'll just leak slow forever. Find a reputable specialty shop, it will save you money in the long run.

It sounds like your turbos. I had the exact same problem, smoking and burning oil smell at startup (very obvious) and some dripping from the undertray. Had to get the turbos rebuilt (Turbo City, $800), and now the problem is gone, no smoke, no smell, not even a drop of oil anywhere. It could be the rear main seal or oil pan gasket, however I don't believe these cause a burning smell, just a leak.

Exclamation

First, you need to find out exactly where the oil leak is coming from. I would suggest taking it to a shop and let them test it.

They'll probably clean up the engine a bit, then run it with some dye in the oil to find where the oil is leaking. Once you find exactly where the leak is, you can go from there.

Oil leaks can happen from all over the place in the car. Not every situation is always the same.

From the content of these replies, I think it would be best to realize that it could be any number of things. Have a pro look at it. Change the belts and fluids yourself, leave the big stuff to people who do this every day, at least until they make a good Chilton's for this beast!

I agree with the above posts, when I had my leak, I took it to Mazdatrix. The mechanic sprayed this toxic smelling stuff all under the engine bay that cleaned the oil right off so he could figure out exactly where it was coming from. The stuff rained down from my car, but it dried and left everything spotless, wow.
