Hey thanks man! That was fun to look at since I didn't have the pleasure of purchasing my new. I just bought mine used and was wondering how much they went for in 93.

Actually the story behind my car is it was owned by the original owner for some 10 years while it was babied in a heated garage and never driven in wet weather. It's really cool because the car only had 16,000 miles on it when I got it a few months ago. I'm very excited needless to say. This car even has the original Bose CD that came with the car and two original keys with code tags and such.

I do remember back in 1992 being at the dealer and sitting in a new 1993 Rx-7. I was amazed at the advertised 4.9 second 0-60 times. It's funny because back then the American cars these would have been up against hardly compared for performance and such. When these cars first came out the dealers here in Arizona would try and hold strong in the $40,000 + range for the cars, but toward the end of bringing the cars into the US couple years later you could drive off the lot for the low 30,000 dollar range. Amazingly it seems the nicer low mile stock Rx-7s are now getting up to near original prices. They are becoming collector vehicles.

I stole this one for 23,000. This car actually still has the original tires on it with the factory wheel weights.

The equivalent of 40,000 dollars with a factor of 5% annual inflation would be about $65,000 ten years passed. Cars are always being assembled more efficiently and with lower costs to the manufacturer. I'd imagine if the third generation Rx-7 was produced today it would still be profitable for the manufacturer at 40,000. Then again for the manufacturer, we would have to put the consumer and dealer idiot factors into that price. Remember there are those that like to buy new turbo vehicles and run full throttle on a cold rotary engine, thus warranty expense. Also we all remember the warranty sabotage the dealers imposed on these cars when they first came out. It seems just about every car out there has had an ECU, set of turbos, EGR and some even with engines all for a vacuum line that popped off. Throw that expense in there and the cars would be 70,000.

miles per gallon

I guess Mazda figures the 5th gear is useful for highway cruising for additional miles per gallon. Maybe at the time it was a way to reduce fuel taxes imposed on the manufacturer by the US government. Who knows though? For a laugh, look at the little print in the estimated fuel consumption area on that window sticker. Now that's funny and obviously some sort of embelishment. Imagine getting 46 miles per gallon.

Any gear less than 1:1 is overdrive. Too lazy to find it on the Forum but 5th gear the engine turns less than 1 to one (one turn engine per wheel rev).

At one point you could nab the car for $27,500+. I drove a couple new in 1993 and almost bought one but it was a little pricey for me at the time Some of the late 95's still on the dock in 1996 could also be bought for this price...

BTW: It doesn't say that the car gets 43 mpg. It says 17 - 25 with a range of 14 - 29. The 46 is the max for other "comparable" 2-seaters

Actually the cost would equal about 43,000 and some change. I have a friend who works with stocks and he did the math for me. Of course thats using the 34,720 dollar figure. I picked my 93 touring up not too long ago for 10,000 even. Just because it needed new tires and it has a small crack in the windshield. I guess the guy thought that was enough to lower his price below everyone else. Nothing is wrong with the car I had everything checked. So far at least.

I think this is trying to establish that, on the US market at the time (1993/94), all cars classified as 2 seaters got, on the low end 9 MPG (Viper, anyone? and 46 on the high end (Miata?CRX?)

It would seem this rating is similar to the energy index on major appliances, where they use the mean curve to determine mileage/efficiency estimates

Excellent pruchase. I cant imagine my car with 65k less miles on it, much less purchased new. They were still a dream for me back then. Well at least one came true right?!

Hmm,
$16K used + the same +/- in mods, (so far). At $32K I'm still ahead, [$70K! / 2 = $35].

And there's the extra motor & parts.

Thanks Greg, that makes it a bit less painful.

Btw all manuals have an overdrive thats one reason their final gear ratio is lower in most cars. 5th or 6th gear is always the overdrive and you normally can't go faster in 6th and in 5th (in 6spd) and can't go faster in 5th than in 4th(5spd). Every since 5spd or 6spd car i've been in tops out before they hit their final gear. Last gear is just to lower rpm while cruising.

I know they went for around $31K to $33K in 93...is it true that in 94 and 95 some touring and R2s went for as much as $43K?

I wonder how much the most expensive one sold for...
