Brakes pedals

What is the exact difference between the Manual and Automatic brake pedals ? I know the auto has a rubber pad and manual perforated aluminum, but beside that is there anything else ?

I would just as soon keep my auto pedal ( that already has a custom pad ) if I can during this auto to manual swap.

The automatic pedal is MUCH wider, and would intrude into the area that the clutch pedal goes. I believe the clutch/brake pedals are an assembly.

Yea I know the auto is wider, but I can trim it down some. I made custom pedal pads for all my auto ones. The parts schematic show the manual pedals as separated, not one continuious unit ( somebody correct me ). I believe the manual and auto are the same EXCEPT the pedal width. This would make the swap a lot easier ( and less costly )

They are no where near the same... one is a rubberized material and the other is a aluminum... cut it down all you want, it will just look ghetto.

And its not a hard question just a pretty common sense one.

And how would it make the swap easier? Pick up a brake pedal for $50 and undo a few screws... not that difficult... definately not the most difficult part of the swap.

Ejmack, I know the auto had the rubber pad, but I removed it and installed a custom aluminum pad - no more rubber ( I run a fab shop ). Actually it looks as good or better than the stock manual pedal, it's just wider on the pad. I can fix that. What I need to know is - is the rest of the manual and auto pedal levers, sensors, bolt up, etc - all the same ? It looks to be the same. The curves, sensor, bolt-up all look the same.

Leave the pedal pad out.....is the rest the same ?

Do you know?

Have not found a clutch pedal yet, still looking. The brake pedals will only have the two switches on it - stoplight switch/cruise control brake switch ( both auto and manual have the same switch combo ).

When I do find and receive a clutch pedal I guess then I will find out how the auto pedal will work alongside it.

I'll report back.

Actually the R1 clutch/brake pedals are aluminum but the base/touring ones are rubber just like the auto pedal.

The only differance is the pedal's width... mechanically they are the same.

Kris - thanks....that was the type answer I needed. I will be able to alter my auto pedal with little effort and reuse it. I wanted to go this route from the beginning but was not sure. Also another forum member sent me some pics and they pretty much show the same. As soon as I get a clutch pedal assembly in my hand, then I can see how much to trim.

I'll send a report abck later.

I thought the aluminum pedals were a part of the R1/R2 package group. There were definately non-aluminum clutch/brake pedals however on the RX-7's, not with the R1/R2's and maybe not with the Touring but they were most definately on the base models. I'd be inclined to believe Mahjik on the Touring getting the aluminum pedals as well since the two touring 5spds I've been in had them and he knows his stuff when it comes to Rex's.

As he said above...."All rx7's except Auto's had aluminum pedals."

Even base models with manual tranny have them. But back on what I'm doing, I'll keep the auto brake pedal for now, modify it and make it look like the pic that the gentleman submitted. I can use that good pic to acheive my demensions.

Thanks to all
