An empty fuel tank is the worst way to put up a car, it allows for more area to build condensation. It's always better to fill up and use fuel stabilizer. Just the temerature change from night to day can cause moisture in the fuel tank and of course has more of an effect over longer periods of time. Could have been nothing more than detonation on bad fuel that took out your motor.
