Boost activated exhaust cutout

http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm

Found this while browsing for IC couplers. The jist of the whole thing is the exhaust cutout will open when the turbo is spooling, be wide open under boost, and close itself when vacuum reappears. Seems like a very simple and effective idea to me, no switches or electronics involved, and it would allow for a nice sleeper effect (i.e. i could finally get rid of my huge GReddy PE can ).

Opinions?

Jesus christ thats ******* genious. I'm ordering one, going to hook it up to a manual boost controller and have it open at 8 psi. That will give my quiet riding all around town, then when I open it up.. You get the idea. Better have a ported wastegate though, I smell a boost spike.

People have been using e-cutouts for quite awhile now. The problem is that they generally cannot survive for long in the exhaust stream. In particular, the hinged joint that opens the flapper tends to get caked with carbon and stop functioning. The cable operated ones (operated via a lever in the cockpit) seem to last longer because you can tell when it is getting coked up and clean it before it totally freezes.

hmm, so carbon is the culprit. Do you think ATP would have thought about those issues (high EGT, carbon deposits, rich afr's) since they are a turbo company? One of the other reasons im considering this one over others i find on Chevy websites is because its made by a turbo dealer and might hold up better against a turbo application

amazing how these have been on factory cars for 10yrs. Someone copies and pretty much get all the credit.

BTW, from what I've heard they open up at 8psi. Seems like it would be a better idea if it were closed during vacuum and then opens at WOT (like BMW made )

If they are set to open at 8psi, thats nothing a little Home depot MBC cant change And their website says that actuator has a wide selection of springs. I do agree that it should open when the turbo begins spooling and closes under vacuum

this is retarded and expensive
just get the one with a switch inside the car
you can do it whenever you want on and off or even half way etc. it has a light indicating how far its open and its about 110 dollars

the only thing is that cost = $235.00

an eletronic cutout cost about 150 i believe and with a hobbs boost sensor, you could do the same thing but have more adjustiblity and you could have it open at a lower psi. you can also rig it to vent at idle to get that milisecond or so of extra response or just standing still to irritate the **** out of someone

i have always like the ablity to have a bit more control over something if at all possible. it is a very cool new design i do like it

It may not be as practical as other cutouts, due to cost. But you have to admit, that's a damn cool idea.

One of the vendors (DMH PERFORMANCE) selling the electric cutout states it takes "Around 3 seconds" to completely open from its closed position....so even if you added a hobbs boost sensor the reaction time from the boost setting would be an additional 3 seconds...you wold most likely be at full boost by then....another vendor indicated it would also have a delay around the same time period

Huh? Boost controllers restrict boost not add. So a mbc could set the valve to open at anything over 8psi, never under

then i guess a different spring for the actuator would be the only way to adjust the PSI it opens at....although, im curious if you got too light of a spring if it would be too light to keep it fully closed w/ no leaks...

Anybody ever use one of these? What if you had a boost controller like the greddy unit and had a high and low boost setting and the cutout opened at high boost? What complication would there be with tuning?

Those electronic cutouts are JUNK.

Shop that used to be here in Pensacola (Fighter's Garage) installed a BUNCH of those on SRT-4's and Evo's. Pretty much all of them failed where the motor wouldn't work or they would leak.

They're not well made, and they will just make your loud car EVEN LOUDER.

If you want a quality way to quiet your car down, search on my thread about the Apexi ECV. You can have a whisper-quiet car for the interstate or driving into your neighborhood but nice and loud when it's fun time. Works wonderfully and is quality built. And cheaper than that E-cutout.
