boiling coolent

Idles ok 900 - 1100. Slightly long crank to start. Oil pressure seems ok.
Gauge never goes past half. Light never comes on / or buzzer.
No loss of water. Coolent looks old / poor. Top rad pipe seems always
substancially hotter than bottom. Thermostate seems to be working, but
I think fan only kicks in with ignition. haven't seen it cut in when
engine is running ( 4 wires to the motor?). heater is working inside.

Short drive; Car heats up within 2 miles to half way, no coolant
bubbling at this stage, but dribbles out overflow. No fan when I stop
to check.

Short drive (car driven hard); bubbles like mad still dribbles out
overflow, same amount as previously. Ignition on fan cuts in but seems
like not before

milage 78,000 km - not tuned just clutch, exhaust, APEX induction kits.
Japanese import, just got it a month ago. Bubbled since day 1.

Does this sound like the APEX seels have gone? Engine rebuild?
Been offered exchange engine for 1,500 euro plus my engine - supplied
and fitted.
Have yet to find out milage of donner engine.. ..Just wanted to
e-mailed you this before I call you .because I can't stay on the phone
too long. (mum)

I'd really appreciate any help you could give me..

First thing: The stock temp gauge is useless. Your best bet is to buy an aftermarket temp gauge so you can see what the actual temperature is.

Have you done any maintenance to the car since you got it? Change the coolant, thermostat, hoses and caps. One cap doesnt have a spring. This goes on top of the thermostat housing. The other cap has a spring and goes on the AST (black/greenish coolant container near the battery).

The coolant seals may be shot or you have air trapped in the cooling system. Try to find a rotary shop somewhere around you or a reputable shop that works on drift cars.

It sounds like you've got two things happening here:

1.) You need to perform some basic maintenance. If this is the case, a new engine won't help at all.

Read this thread and perform all the maintenance listed in section 5. I recommend using a 16psi (1.1bar) pressure cap on the AST.
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/big-fat-fd3s-cooling-thread-571088/

2.) You *might* have a failed coolant seal.
First, I suggest you read the following webpage, and decide if you've got the symptoms of a blown coolant o-ring:
http://www.fd3s.net/o-ring_failure.html

Second, read question 24) in the FAQ located at https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

Third, search for "blown coolant seal" , or "champagne bubble," for more info. Be sure to check your coolant level very carefully for the next few weeks.

If your coolant o-rings are indeed bad, installing a different motor doesn't guarantee anything, unless you know when it was rebuilt and what parts are inside it. I would rebuild an old engine before I'd buy a 'new' one.
