BNR Stage III don't fit?

For those who have these...

Just got mine in a couple of days ago and, in the process of installing them on a basically stock car, they don't fit. It was my understanding that these were "bolt on" but it dosen't appear so. I knew there would be some fitment differences since the Y-pipe had to be lengthed but I thought they would basically bolt right in. Now the air pump won't fit. What have you guys done?

I've attached pics showing how the air-pump hits the outlet pipe.

It looks to me that either you cant use the airpump with the bnr's, the y pipe was modified incorrectly, or it is somehow installed wrong. your solution probably lies somewhere in those three categories.

I would definitely search the forums and ask the guys that have bnr's

possibly that the BNR's were not designed for use with the air pump

Out of curiousity when did you order yours? I ordered mine about 2 months ago, just wondering if thats normal turnaround time? I know you cant rush perfection, but still Im curious if thats normal. Hell, now that I asked theyll probally arrive monday

Have you thought about clocking the cold side of the front turbo enough to clear the air pump hose? you have to undo i think 6 bolts, and essentially twist the outside housing to clear it. This will most likely throw off the IC piping depending on how you have it run. Not the best solution, but it is there none the less.

Wow. In all the BNR threads over the years I have NEVER seen that the Y pipe had to have that modification done. I too was under the impression this was a direct replacement, bolt in operation.
Damn but I am glad I didn't go the BNR route when I replaced my turbos!
If this is the normal case, there needs to be a 'sticky' in the appropriate section detailing this.

NOT COOL!

air pump fit

It is a very tight fit and the air pump outlet pipe has to be modified.I don't have pictures of the modified pipe but you can see what needs to be done.Since I did this fit up I have acquired an efini Y pipe and the fit is much better because the flanged joint is higher. The pipe is with Bryan now for the extension to be welded in.

Not sure but all turbos will need to be clocked. At least that is my experience. Just putting in the 99 spec turbos is a pain. I have heard nothing but good things from people using the BNR. It is a slow and careful fitting process.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything negative about Bryan or BNR Turbos...I just wasn't expecting this interference during the install. Believe me, I can't wait to drive the car with the BNR's. Bryan is actually one of the easiest and nicest guys to deal with. But they are closed today and I need to get these badboys installed. How do you clock (rotate) the turbo housing? I see on the hot side there are six bolts and on the compressor side there is a large retaining clip.

How the heck does 'clocking' the turbo(s) do anything? Unless you are turning the Y pipe to a non-vertical position? Then THAT would be adding a whole new set of problems, wouldn't it?
I mean, it appears that the Y pipe hitting is the problem, right? It seems that the distance betwixt the turbos is greater with the BNRs.

by losing the six bolt on both turbos you can rotate the outlets to get the best fit. You will need to take off the turbos to do this at least twice as you do the fitting. Not a big deal just a pain in the ***

Actually, the Y-pipe outlet is not vertical. It is angled away from the engine between 5 and 10 degrees so I thought this was normal. This appears to be causing interference problem and clocking them will probably resolve the issue. I didn't want to go messing with them without consulting you guys first.

First time I got a set of turbos it scared me a little as well. There is so much money tied up in these cars that making a mistake can be very costly. Steady on my friend

Well, I've "clocked" the turbo housing as far as they will go. The lower coolant line is making contact with the OMP heatshield. Still not enough to clear the pipe coming off of the air pump. Is anyone actually running the air pump with BNR Stage III's?

Why not just call Bryan @ BNR ? He will be more than happy to tell you how to fix the issue you are having?

I just got my BNR's installed on Wednesday. I still have the stock Airpump in place. When I had mine installed (took it to a shop since I had a LOT of other things added in there as well, and I would rather spend $1,400 to make sure it's all done correctly and tuned afterwards than try it on my own, but mess it up) it did not seem to be a problem. The Y-pipe and turbo's will fit just fine in the stock location. You may need to shoe-horn the air pump in there just enough to get the top bolt through providing a pivot point. From there I would take a pry bar and physically push that bitch out of the way the pipe should rest BELOW where your y-pipe meets your IC piping.. prybar on top + body weight should get the job done, you'll be able to get the other bolts in and secured at this point.

My mechanic did not reinstall anything but the turbo's and fuel rails until the engine was mounted back in the car (this also helps with getting to the bell housing bolts). At that point it should be no different than just taking out and replacing the airpump like normal.

I hope this helps.

Hey Guys.

Sorry to hear you are having fitment issues. This is the process I do when I disassble turbochargers. I mark both the turbine housings and compressor housings before they are taken loose. This makes them very close to where they are supposed to be when I reassemble them. There are times that I get turbos that have been tampered with before I get my hands on them so it is hard to get everything lined up just perfect. The turbos have to be just right or else you will have to adjust them. Once everything is fitted into position (Compressor housing outlets) the Y pipe should clear the air pump. If you have to clearance the air pump discharge, just demple it in instead of removing material. The water line can be tweaked and redirected if done carefully.

I will try and help the best I can, but I hardly check PM's or get on the club much anymore. Getting old I guess .

Update:
I talked with Bryan and he suggested, as stated above, that I carefully bend the lower coolant line up so that the turbos could be clocked more a hopefully gain some clearance. With this, I finally gained approx .200" clearance between the y-pipe flange and airpump tube with the belt on. Almost enough. My last adjustment to gain that little tiny bit more will be to grind off the tab on the bottom of the alterantor housing that makes contact with the water pump. With this ground down it will drop the alternator a little bit and allow me to raise the airpump a little bit more. I'll update again, with pics, over the upcoming weekend.

NOT COOL!
They are bolt up. I have to extend the Y pipe 1/2" in order for the Y to connect the 2 turbos. The Garrett CHRA's are 1/4" longer than OE. 1/4" isn't going to put the Y pipe under the air pump. Something is just not clocked right. I have sold many of these units with no problems. I sell many of these to CA guys and they don't have problems with fitment with the air pump. When you want to run high boost with twins the stock hitachi units won't handle the abuse that the GT28's do. When you work on an rx7, its not always magic!

BTW, it looks to me like the Y needs to be pushed a good bit toward the Lower intake manifold.

Update

Finally got em' in. It's a tight fit around the outlet tube on the air pump but was able to fit them in. I did have to slightly bend the cooling lines so I could clock the turbos as much as possible and also had to adjusted the oil line so it would line up at the coupling. Not a big deal but a great result.

My freshly rebuilt engine (done by Fighters Garage and Dale Clarke) is now installed I have had no other fitment issues with any of the associated turbo plumbing. Tonight will be the first startup of my FD since the engine went out several months ago. Sucks that I'll have to baby it for a while before I can see what the BNR's can do. Thanks Bryan and Doc-1 for your help.

Nice! Glad to see you finally got her to fit.

Did you have any porting done to you engine with the rebuild, or did you just stick to stock?
