If I were you I would look for a car that has already been modified. Modifiying cars is a money pit no matter what you build you can never get your money back out of it. I have done it before and all of the cars I have recently purchased have been modified. Just watch out for bad installs and look for wear on the parts installed. I picked up a rhd 1st gen rx7 for about $4500 shipped here compleat with a ported cosmo 13b,single turbo, tec 3 ems, fmic, ect he had 15k in recipts for that car. I am picking up a 3rd gen with a big single turbo, apexi fc, FMIC, body kit, enki rims ECT for 11k someone probly sunk 20k? into the car.it will be here on fri... I rather buy a car that has 20k worth of parts on it then one thats stock for the same price or even 2x the price across the country. The forums are the best place to find them too. Nomatter what make or model of car. The majority of people on here are preformance oriented and they figure they can get someone else who is preformance minded to buy there car and relize how much time and money they put into it. I seen some BAD *** 3rd gens go for real cheap here.

I disagree with those who say the resale value of the FD is poor. I don't see many other 11 year old sports cars still selling in the $20s-$30s. I'm referring to a very clean car with very low mileage. I don't think you can find a M3 that was made in 93-95 that has a better resale value, even if it had low miles. I'm not talking about FDs with 30-50k miles. I'm talking about 10k-25k miles. If you want a car to beat the crap out of everyday and drive everyday than the M3 is probably your car. The FD is a good car, but not good as a daily driver (due to size and comfort). The FD fits like a glove. No extra fat spared.

The FD is a special car that needs a special owner. The FD isn't a daily driver and should be used that way. The FD is very reliable if taken care of, several board members have many miles on the original engine. Just like the new 2002+ M3, they had many problems with engines blowing up and puking. I have 3 FDs and never had one single problem with any of them. They start up and pull hard everytime.

As far as looks go, RX7 hands down!

There are many owners out there that will disagree with me in regards to reliability. But I think the issue is that they bought a used car that was probably abused or have many miles on them. Buying an RX7 with a rebuilt engine doesn't mean it is a good car as well. My advice is to buy an original low mileage FD. If you have questions feel free to email me.

LOL too much typing

it boils down to this

an rx7 is a weekend car, a car unlike alot out there that can be used for a fun drive after a long hard week at work

an m3 is more of a car that you would want to use everyday, just to drive to work, school, etc etc.. and its still fun..

BUT

...........

bah what am i saying..

here is what will make up your mind

what would you have fun with more? a wife or a one night stand?

the wife, you see her everyday, pretty much everyone seen her, its not much to show off, cant have that much fun cause it bores you took quick..

OR

the one night stand, after a hard week of working, you're dying to get to that friday night so you can call that one night stand of yours so have that weekend full of lust, sweat, and all that craziness..then when the time is over, you're bummed and you cant wait til another week passes..

well in this case
m3=wife
rx7=one night stand

i rest my case

I own both of the cars you are considering, a 1997 M3 coupe and a 1993 CYM R1. Most of the differences have been touched on already but here's my subjective feelings on both cars.

M3 is a great performing car that you can drive everyday. Characteristics: Comfortable, great looks, loads of torque for around town driving, decent gas mileage, good handling, quiet interior, excellent steering feel, seems to run out of steam at higher RPM, and shift throws are a little too long for my tastes.

RX-7 is an awesome pure sports car (M3 is a touring car). Characteristics: Razor sharp handling, excellent high rpm performance, light weight, excellent shifter, good ergonomics, best form fitting seats short of aftermarket ones, poor gas mileage, stiff ride, little torque low in the RPM range, and interior that is a little noisy.

Both of my cars are relatively stock, the M3 has an exhaust, intake, and pulleys while the RX-7 has a downpipe and an exhaust. Both cars have eibach springs. I use the RX-7 as a mostly weekend car but do drive it to work sometimes.
