This Blows---Literally!!!!

I just finished replacing my spring and the damn shocks blows out and sprays fluid everywhere !!

I'm going to go insane!!!

Yes, you did read right...I did say spring (singular)! It's all I had time for today (Superbowl time). Is the shock fluid harmful like brake fluid to paint? I've have the tokico illuminas for only 6 months! This sucks...Is this going to happen on all the shock when I go to put the other springs on? They are the Eibach pro's. WTF?

Someone keep me sane here!

Unfortunately, this is a fairly common occurance with the tokico illuminas. If you are the original owner of the shocks and sent in the registration card, tokico will honor the lifetime warranty. Good luck.

I doubt it's anything bad like brake fluid. It's probably something similar to ATF.

goodluck,

It's not a common problem.

The problem is you cannot use the FD manual stock torque specs for the upper nut on the Tokico's. If you do, it will over tighten and bust the shock (don't ask how I know).

Ah, didn't know that. I thought it was a common problem since I have heard of at least 5 cases of tokico illuminas blowing on this forum. I can't remember reading of any similar problems with koni's, gab's, etc.

edit: do you remember what torque spec tokico recommends for the upper nut?

Well, there are some that have failed, no question about that. Most of the time though it's due to over tightening that top nut. It will stress the top of the shock too much and then break, shooting the fluid out of the top.

The funny/sad thing is that the top nut really doesn't have to be that tight in the first place. It's just holding the rubber in place.

EDIT: BTW, nashman69g, it's not harmful. Just clean it up with some warm soapy water.

WOW!!!!! thats sucks *** if that was the case because Marshall was VERY careful to tighten down that nut to exact factory spec. He was extremely worried about that bolt( I was like **** it tighten that ****, which he didnt) and I am sure he is going to read this and be pissed if that is the case.

sorry marshall,

Well I learn something new everyday! I called up the tokico and they told me to call the place I bought them from and they will replace it under warrenty. The sucky part is I can't drive it for a few weeks and I have to find a place to leave it jacked up! Well it looks like its back to the truck for a while!

Oh and thanks for the help so far!
