I think my friends fd has blown a apex seal, all the usual signs -
rough idle, stalls and puffs out little black puffs of smoke. The
engine is only 8k old his mods are intake ,midpipe and catback on the
std ecu.does anyone know why this happened as he hasnt done very much
to it or could there be any other reasons for the above.Any help
would be appreciated,thanks Roy.

he has a midpipe and not a downpipe? what the?
what year is it? I'm assuming it's not a '96 or newer, 'cause there won't be too many people on this list that know anything about them.
If it's a '95 or older, running a midpipe with a stock ECU is asking for trouble. It's very possible that he was getting boost creep & just overboosted to the point at which the apex seal broke.
so yeah, what year, how many miles, is there a downpipe on the car?, etc. More info please.
edit: ok, just saw you said it has 8K miles.... still, year and downpipe info needed.

Geez, people are so stupid when it comes to these cars. I'd say about 75% of the blown motors I see on this forum are running a midpipe on a stock ecu.

Here's some advice to all those FD owners who are still in school or don't have a high paying job -- keep the damn thing close to stock. Put on a downpipe, maintain it, and leave it alone.
Rant over.
