I have a question for the experienced bov owners. I am planning on buying an HKS SSQV. I love the sound, and I want to put it either on the hot side of the intercooler or on the tb elbow. Which position is better for performance? Also, what flange is needed to install the BOV on our car, I know they sell a kit to put in the stock position, I don't want that, I want to do a custom install but don't know which flange to use.

typically the best place for a bov is closest to the throttlebody as possible. that's why i bought the greddy elbow with bov. made it real easy. that's where the pressure hits hardest at first when the throttle plates are closed, then it sends a wave back to your compressor blades

 

Do you have any idea which flange to use to custom mount the hks bov on the greddy elbow?

 

blow off valves are used to relieve compressor surge......for best results mount the B.O.V. as close to the compressor as possible...this will also release the higher pressure and hotter charge......allowing more (intercooled) air charge to remain in the piping....

 

you can get an aluminum or steel flange and different sizes also

if it is for the hks bov then you are fine. Just have it welded and put on the bov. I think the best place for performance is near the turbo but the best for safety is closer to the throttle. It also may be louder on the turbo side. I wish someone would clear all of this up. BTW I just got a hks ss bov and Im going to go through all of this so you can kit me up if you have any questions.

My machanic now has two HKS bov s ,one on the y pipe and one on the elbow . So the question is answered for him .The bigger turbos need more vent area .

 

the best thing to do is leave the stock bov on the y-pipe and add the aftermarket one to the elbow..this will give you good compressor surge prevention from the stock valve and extra volumetric exhaust from the aftermarket...i run the stocker and a greddy type-s...sounds graet!!

 

For welding to an Aluminium pipe use Aluminium Flange Steel use Steel... But what you want is their genric flanges... they only sell two generic ones ....

 

Sounds great, Let me know how it goes, for now Im thinking about putting it close to the turbo side. On the hot side of the intercooler it is said to be louder and perform better. just as a side note, i had an a'pexi twin chamber on the y-pipe before i bought the type-s and greddy elbow. the type-s seems to react a lot faster versus the apex. it coulda been the difference between brand, but it's also way louder.

 

I heard that HKS is supposedly the fastest reacting BOv and that it is physically impossible for the SSQV to leak.

 

compressor side or throttle body side both are used by many different types of race cars. as long as the valve moves enough air to prevent surge and you like the sound it will be fine. space often dictates where it will go

 

Thats true as well, we talk as if hood clearence was not a problem, but sometimes it can be.
