Blow Off Valve On An Auto?

I was thinking about putting on on my car, but it's an automatic. Does this matter?

You already have OR SHOULD HAVE, a BOV. If you can't hear it work (release pressure), take off the hose it's connected to ( this is known as "venting to the atmosphere") and plug the nipple on your air box or aftermarket intake, and then you might be able to hear it release between gear changes. I have an Automatic too and the best way to hear the BOV do it'samagic is to shift gears manually while the tranny is in the "hold" mode. Sounds pretty cool.

Okay, I do get that "pssshhh" sound when the trannie shifts gears. But all I have off the HKS SMF air intake is a hose and if that's not it where would I find the stock BOV?

The stock brown colored BOV is the one that's connected to the hose that comes off the side of the Y-Pipe.

What are the benefits or replacing the stock BOV with an aftermarket one and do you have any suggestions as which one to purchase?

Honestly, the only reason I would ever contemplate replacing MY stock BOV would be if it was not working properly, i.e; venting when it's not suppose to, thereby engine loosing boost.

As I understand, one of the benefits of replacing it with an aftermarket BOV is that some can be adjusted to release pressure at a certain time. Some BOV's can cost near 300 smakaroos, but you can find a good one for about 180.00.

OR....... just do a search on ebay or here on the forum or look on the "parts for sale" posts and maybe you'll land a good used one for a decent price.

I'd go with the HKS SSQBOV, they say for the money its the best one to get, makes a very loud sound and you can turn the spring to release more/less air thus controling the way it sounds.

I have the greddy one too. RP/rotary performacne has a greddy kit that is made for 3rd gens. Thats what I went with and you can hear it some times if it's under good presure so forth. Oh I have an auto too.

Ah yes, I love these threads...... threads like these got me into big trouble last time....... hehe.....

On a lil bit more serious note, I think venting the stock BOV in an automatic will work just fine. I don't think you'll get to hear the PSH sound effect as often since you'll have your foot on the gas the entire time.

To obtain a short loud pressure release, just shift manually by placing the tranny in "hold" position. In 1st gear (Low) drive off and let the rpms increase to about 2500, let off the gas, BOV will do it's job, then shift to 2nd, same sequence to 3rd (drive) and finally depress the hold button so that the tranny can shift to 4th. Works great for me and sounds just like a stick tranny.

Do you do that if you were to race someone? That sounds like a hassle and shifting fast when you're trying to race someone might make you "mis shift"?
