Binding

Hello all just a bit of advise please. I am currently in the middle of a rebuild and I am taking my time to complete it correctly with a mild street port.
my question is. The rotarys look ok but there is a small amount of binding on two ends of one rotor!
Is this normal? Would you file? Or would you leave? Or would you get a second hand decent rotor? Any advice is always appreciated.
Thanks all
Jamie

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Of course I was typing and thinking out loud with out reading back so sorry. My apex seals bind. I am worried when I replace the new ones will stick it’s only a little bind! Nothing really bad. But on the two tips that had broken apex seals.
sorry and thanks again.

You definitely do NOT want your apex seals to bind!! All your hard seals (apex, side, corner, etc) need to be able to move in and out of their recesses freely.

The first thing I'd do is ensure your rotor is totally clean and free of any carbon build up. After that I'd check to verify that the rotor tips didn't get banged up and pinch in a bit at the corner seal area.

Following those checks I would file the apex seal slot slightly. There is a specific clearance gap that you're supposed to have though I don't remember it off the top of my head. Check the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for the proper clearances on all your hard seals.

If you don't have the FSM then I'd highly recommend you get it!! There was a free download hosted at foxed.ca (or something like that) forever ago when I got mine.

Good luck!! 👍

Also, if you can post pictures of the offending area that might help us help you

the rotors are quite soft, so its easy to damage them if they aren't treated well

Thanks all

Ok thanks for response. So i have a Precision file and gentle filed edges and used gauges and manual to get correct opening. The only issue I have is one corner seal is really tight so I used an old one and it’s much better.
still in back of my mind I am wondering if I should replace that rotor just in case?

If the corner seal is binding you need to figure out why. If it gets stuck down in there you'll be taking that motor back apart.

Make sure that corner seal pocket is CLEAN. The tiniest bit of carbon can bind things up.

There is an OEM tool for measuring corner seal pockets, basically a go/no-go gauge. If you can't get it to move properly because the tip of the rotor is bent (that happens frequently from shipping or mishandling) you may need to look at replacement.

You may need to do something like this but if you already clearanced the apex slot it may be too late. I've had good experience with this shop but others not, ymmv.
