Best performance for $3000 ?

Sup,

My friend has 93 RX-7 and has 3G's to spend on it. It's stock and automatic. What 1/4 time could he expect after ivesting that money into the motor? Also what upgrades seem realistic for $3000 ?

Yea, that seems like best idea if you ask me but he's kinda stubborn and doesn't want to(we already talked about it). Any other mods/recommendations that could be done with 3 g's?

Tell your friend to do lots of reading on this forum. It will give him plenty of input.

Downpipe - 200
Midpipe - 100
Catback - 500
Intake - 200
Fuel pump - 200
1300 secondaries - 300
Power FC - 1000
_______________

TOTAL: $2500

Thats what I would do with $3000 and a stock FD

Next mod would be a FMIC but that gets pricey

I would do the tranny swap or modify the one he got so I can handle the power. From what I read is the auto tranny don't handle a lot of power.

How about doing some general maintenance on the car? If he just bought it, I'm sure there's several hundred dollars of maintenance that should probably be done.....

Since he lives in Cali, I would recommend downpipe, exhaust, intake, intercooler, boost controller and Pettit ecu or PFC.

Next would be decent tires, upgraded suspension, etc.

thx for the reply's guys. I have to say one or two things. First I live in AZ and so does he but that doesnt matter

He's 7 does need maintnance bad and I urged him to read at this great forum so he knows his **** before doing anything to the car . But he's stubborn and with "I know everything" attitude. I'm trying to help him but he just won't listen. The 93 RX-7 he bought is in pretty bad shape. First one turbo is dead and the second is leaking bad. There are many leaks in his engine including oil leaks. The downpipe has holes and the cat is completely fucked up. If that was my car I would be treating her like best friend but I gota take care of my 2G GST .

I'm afraid he will put bigger turbo (taking about it all the time) and blow the engine and tranny. He even ravs his engine to 9K rpm and stays for long time. I just feel sorry for the car. That car should be in more responsible hands.

Swap out the auto for sure.

The best $$ spent is in making the car right and not blowing all the $$ on bling, bling crap.

Make sure the car has good tires, good brake pads (Hawk, Porterfield, etc), all the fluids and filters are fresh. Basically make sure the car is maintained and then add the power mods.

Too many people buy exhaust and cheap crap tires, etc. It kills me...

Oh reading your last post. Tell him to put a rebuilt motor in it and not deal with all the leaks in the current motor.

BS, he doesn't rev the motor to 9K, there is this new thing called a rev limiter... Auto trans cars have a 7k rpm redline, 5spd cars have a 8k rpm redline.

hey turbojeff thanks bro. Your post makes sense and I would do same if it was my car But I know he won't do the maintnance but oh well.
And he said he put the car in first gear and stayed in it and hit gas till it passed all the way till 9K rpm. He said after 7K rpm the car was giving him singal but he ignored it and went all the way . I don't have 7 and don't know how much truth is behind his story. So if you say it won't go beyond 7 K RPM I do belive you.

No offense man, but your friend sounds like he shouldn't own a 7. If he wont do any regular maintenance on it, which is extremely important for this car, he wants to put a big single on it right away without any other mods, and doesn't know to much about the car itself, he really should have bought a civic or something. A car that wont be too expensive to fix when he breaks it.

And on top of all that , he "supposedly" revs to 9000 on a regular basis with two turbos in really bad shape.

Tisk tisk.

Ya know, you sound pretty knowledgable and willing to learn about these cars. See if you can buy it from him or something. In the long run, it'll save him so much money.

You know, i'm starting to feel bad for that car. If you still wanna know what a good idea is for the $3000, get him to swap the auto to a manual. That, in the long run, will be so much better than the auto.

Thanks for the help and compliment ROTORhead . After he told me about the leaks (he did diagnostics at the dealer) I told him to either rebuild or get used engine imported from Japan (from Ebay). The imported ones are promissed not to have any leaks and to be in excellent shape. They also sell for about $2000. There would be still 1 G left to do basic maintnance and do few basic upgrades.

I love the 7 and I will buy one once I finish College and get fulltime job. The RX-7 is beautiful Japanese supercar. Right now I'm modding my 95 Eclipse GST. Spend $800 in 60K maintnance 2 weeks ago. I decided on 7 as my next car and hope I will learn a lot on this forum before I buy it.(could take 3-4 years )

PS: No way I'm buying his car. It's already in such shitty shape that the dealer said it's not worth fixing it. "Just drive till it drops" he said.

well, i hope that when you decide to buy an RX7, you find a good condition one, and also, hopefully, you'll know alot about these cars, atleast enough to keep it running happy. (happy, yeah right)

how about getting the turbos rebuilt, new dp, cat, cat-back, intake and PFC... that's an easy way to take care of some issue its already having plus give him a decent power boost... but god i feel bad for that car... how do you rev an automatic past redline? i've never driven an auto RX so don't get all uppity with me guys... i'm just trying to learn about the one i have

most cars aren't worth fixing to a dealer, that's why people like turbojeff exist do it for love of the vehicle (and maybe some cash too, i'm not sure what his deal is totally). if i could afford the parts and could put in the wrench time i garun-damn-tee that i'd do it

*edit* if he keeps driving like that, he's gonna be spending that $3k on a new engine.... just food for thought.

Since the auto will automatically shift for you, and there's an 8300 rpm rev limiter for the manuals, your friend is lying.

Since your friend doesn't give a **** about the car, and he won't listen to you, what is the point of this thread??

And maybe he'll listen for once. Have to try my best and save that car.

Whatever you do, when it goes boom, don't let him go around saying what POS's these cars are.
