Someone on this forum makes custom intake which uses the stock airbox. It's called the "Cheap bastard intake" or something like that; it makes power gains almost as good (if not as good or MAYBE better) as aftermarket intakes. The price is only $70

I have a HKS intake,, the piping looks nice but i can see a few fundamental flaws... its inside the engine bay and unless you have a shield it will suck in hot air..
ive had my car for a week and i dont know when the kit was installed BUT the foam has become all hard from presumably the heat of the engine bay. I used HKS filters back home in OZ and the foam was never this hard.
New ones maybe ok but unless hks replacement filters are cheap then id be weary with this kit. Hks filters also tend to shrink a little over age and dont seal perfectly.
Im looking to replace either the filter element with blitz or trust filters OR buy a ARC airbox, anyone using this?

There is a thread stating that Apexi intakes are the best one in the market only because it filters the air a whole lot better than any other filters and it showed the most HP gain but IMHO I like the hks better since it does lets air through a lot more than any other..no suffocation of air..filtering wise I'm not that worried since I dont drive the car off road..

But for people not running the same set up, yes it will be sucking in hot air but that is why you have an intercooler to cool down that hot air.
That is the way I see it, I could be wrong....

Back in the 7 life again
well, if you have the cold air going right into it with the v, that is good but I just dont like the idea of adding heat to an engine that already has problems with it.

A lot of intakes have heat shields. That helps them only pull in the air that come in above the radiator. Of course, if you have an FMIC, that's going to screw things up for sure, I would think.

I have tried both box and open element air filters on my car. There was a minimal difference in intake temps, maybe 1 degree C. If you have an aftermarket IC I can't really see intake type changing the temp of the air at the intake temp sensor

Heres a link to the Cheap Bastard Intake thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/cheap-stock-airbox-mod-121491/
It makes power as good or better than the expensive cold air intakes. It costs a lot less ($70 shipped), and will pass the visual at smog time.
