Ignition coils wise you should be fine with stock FD coils and an HKS Twin Power. If your stock coils aren't working very well than its probably because they are going on 20 years old..

When I had a big rebuild project ($13k into sprucing everything up) last winter my builder suggested that I just get a NEW oem primary coil, knowing full well that I'd be running AI and power in the high 400s-500whp range.

You can go all custom if you want, but you don't really NEED to.

Extremely loaded question. Power output? AI? OEM coils have been proven to worth with setups over 500whp.... OEM coils that are newer or have been relocated from the heat factory stand a better chance. An ignition system's components working together are going to yield the best results.

Quality plugs at the right heat range
Ignition amplification/CDI
quality wires
Coils

All play a significant role.

Thought I might piggyback on this thread since we are talking about coils.

Aiming for 400whp on E85.

I'm interested in these: http://www.aemelectronics.com/high-o...mart-coil-1240

Seems to simplify the ignition system (a plus for me).

However, if the OEM coils are just as good, they can be relocated to the ignitor area.

I've also seen several people swap out the FD coils for the FC TII coils

OEM with twinpower, easy to source and plug and play. I agree that relocating them is a good idea.

I relocated my coils to the area where the Cruise Control used to be. Much less heat and vibration there.

NB Miata's have issues with the coils (mine did). They are located on a bracket that hangs off the back of the motor next to the firewall. It doesn't seem unreasonable to think that the failure rate may be due in part to the poor location. Had I kept that car those coils would have been moved somewhere cooler and without the vibration.
