Best Alarms
Wondering if anybody has any thoughts of what kind of Alarm System to put on my rex. Also if anybody has any experience with installing an actuator in the driverside door.

personally, i believe almost any alarm is the same. But you may want to go with the more popular brands such as viper.
but there are also alarms that pages you when you vehicle is being messed with, such as this one (it looks like it comes with an LCD screen so that you can see which portion of your car is being tampered with)

Why trash the stock alarm?
If you want keyless entry, then you'll have a problem.
I haven't seen where anyone has ever installed keyless entry on a FD without eventuelly breaking the cable on the door actuator.
If you know otherwise, please let me know.

hmm... ive had my clifford for 3years. and the locking cable on the driver side broke after thee month of usage.
i had fun playing with driver's side key-hole illumination but that thing broke a couple of month ago.
so... now im having fun scratching around the key-hole area with my key.

could you be a little more specific about how-to?

Mine didn't last either
Maybe it's best to disable that function and just use a key although that is one of the luxary reasons you get an alarm..."remote power door" locks and interior light turning on to see the ignition.
I personaly prefer Ungo and Alpine. Clifford was bought out by Viper and Viper is in too many cars which means alot of theives allready know how to disable it easy.
Alarms are mostly luxary and a "false" sense of security. Pay extra for the instillation instead of the frills.
1. Have brain hidden and extremely hard to reach.
(don't let them put it under the dash/guages)
2. have siren mounted where it is too dificult to cut it's wires or where it can't be seen in the engine (but it can be cut at the battery).
3. backup battery for the alarm and ear peircing piazo horn inside of car.
4. Tip installer ahead of time, so he knows you want quality work or buy him lunch. You don't want your wires all hacked up by some amateur installer either.
5. Spend the extra money on LoJack or TeleTrac theft recovery system.
Please post the info for the right hand side actuator!
I'm sure everyone wants to know that fix.

Personally, I don't think anyone pays attention to alarms anymore. I hear two or three go off everyday. False alarms have caused this if you ask me. I had a Clifford SE5000(I believe) I had it about 3 years ago. It wasn't on my RX7. I liked it. It did a bunch of neat stuff like opened my sunroof. cracked and rolled up or down my windows, started the car, had micro wave sensors inside and outside(didn't talk though, just beeped at you), shock sensor, I could turn the head lights on to find my car if I wanted, battery back up, interior siren, keyless entry, I could put it in valet by the remote, I could change the sound of the chirp when it was armed or disarmed, and I could set the micro wave sensors with the remote too. It was cool for a while, but all in all if it went off I don't think anyone would have noticed. It was a big waste of money. I would invest into something that will immobilize your car, or something to that effect. Don't invest in a noise maker. If your in a movie are you going to hear it. And if you get paged ever time the dang thing goes off are you going to run out of the movie to see nothing going on. I would feel much safer knowing my car wasn't going anywhere unless I say it is. That's just my opinion though. Plus I would probably take my wifes car to the movies, and leave mine in the garage anyway. Hehe. By all means though...Good luck.

Alarms
GoRacer & rtryrktrx7, Thanks for your valuable input. I'm inclined to agree with you concerning the commonality of auto alarms. They go off constantly and nobody pays any attention to them.
As for the fix on the broken actuator, I found some old threads that detail the probs. Use the Search engine here at the Forum and look for "alarm" in 3rd Gen Forum and in Archives. There you will find a thread entitled "man, I am so infuse...keyless entry" and another entitled "Aftermarket Alarm". They should provide you with plenty of reading material.
Then, after you have perused the threads, you'll just shake your head and say, "Huh?"
Until I find a definite solution, I'm staying stock alarm.

Don't they have aftermarket door actuators? I had to have them installed in my Mazda MX3. As long as a car has automatic doors then they should be able to do a keyless entry system. There are a few exceptions though (like the MX3) where I had automatic doors, but it still required an aftermarket actuator. Go to your local Audio/Alarm shop, they should be able to tell you if it needed it or not. BTW my alarm was a Clifford XXXXX. don't remember the number.

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN....I also had an MX-3 and when i had an alarm installed they installed actuators to give me keyless entry. It worked vwery well.
The problem, as I understand it, with the RX-7 is the location of the door locking mechanism is such that you can't use standard aftermarket door actuators. The stock alarm system uses a cable mechanism that unlocks the passenger door when you unlock the driver door with the key. It only works one way.....all the control comes from the driver doorlock. There is only one actuator.
I am told that if you obtain the door actuator from a right hand drive RX-7 and install it upside down with some modifications, it will work. There are a couple old Threads that talk about this procedure, but I have never seen an RX-7 with this done. Plus, I believe it is not easy to get one.
I have read that when you install keyless entry on a 3rd Gen, the cable will break after several months and the cost for a replacement cabling mechanism is $200.

I bought my car with a viper alarm installed and the keyless entry for it works and has been working for 4 yrs. No cables have broken. I am not sure how it is set up but I know there are like 4 relays under the dash.
