before i buy it, is it worth it??

ok guys, i need your opinion...i want to buy a 93 fd..the only thing is that the engine is blown..my question is is that do you think its worth buying the car with a blown engine.. the guy is selling the car for 8000.. the paint is pretty good and doesnt need to be repainted.. it does have some minor scratches and dents here and there but i would expect that for a 10 year old car. the interior is super clean..he also said that the 3rd gear synchro may be messed up cause its grinds once in a while but its still very driveable.. should i get this car??

my second question (please dont flame or whatever) is the engine def needs to be worked on.. the chassis has approx 62k miles on it with the original engine.. should i replace the engine or have it rebuilt?? some guy is pa said he can rebuild my stock engine for like 2500 with labor.. should i just buy a totally spankin new rebuilt engine or just rebuild the one i have now?? which would make more sense and which would be better for me in the future??

help guys

thanks

It's hard to tell the route you should take until you remove the motor and take it apart. I was going to rebuild mine, until I pulled it apart and realized I need two new rotor housings, a new rotor, along with all the other parts. It's hard to justify rebuilding a motor like that when you can go to Malloy Mazda and order a reman with new rotor housings for $2000.

Sounds like a decent deal. Is it totally stock?

I recommend going with a reman motor. Your stocker most likely has quite a bit of wear on it. The mileage is low, but remember that those parts are over 10 years old. A reman also gets you a new water pump and flywheel among other things.

the remans are not "totally new". they are rebuilt. do a search on 'reman' and read the newbie links up top. $8k isn't bad, but I'd like a lower price if the car had few expensive mods and needs a tranny rebuild too. You are talking min $2k for the motor $1k labor to remove/replace, $400 clutch, $500-1k for a tranny etc, etc, etc,

get that tranny replaces/fixed asap if you do buy the car. In anycase, I'd say its a good price. I agree with paw140, it might be worth it to go either way depending on how bad the engine is.

If its the original paint job, has dents and dings, and is basically a stock car, plus with the transmission problem, no way would it be worth $8,000 to me. I bought mine for $12,000 with the motor rebuilt 8,000 miles before. If you cant do the work of pulling and reinstalling a motor all yourself, your looking at maybe costing yourself $4K-8K in parts and labor. If the car had brand new paint job and the interior was flawless and it had some aftermarket stuff, it might just might be worth 8,000$ to me.

The good thing about buying a car like this is that once you've done the motor you know it is a good motor. You could pay top dollar for the car and find the motor needs doing anyway.
