Battery getting way too hot

I have an odyssey 925 battery in the rear bin and it was just getting ridiculously hot after driving. It looks like some moisture got in there and it started to steam. It was raining out and i was in and out of the car so that explains the water.

But the battery was ridiculously hot. It's been drained and recharged a lot, probably 4 years old. It's been moved back there longer than that w/no problems.

I am having problems with my idle using any accessories. Could this just be a bad battery? I would think there'd have to be some kind of short to heat the battery up so much but everything I could quickly check works fine.

But i hate electrical junk so if anyone could share some info that'd be great.

The battery may have an internal short in one of the cells that's causing it to overheat - the voltage regulator is seeing low voltage and puts out more amps to compensate, overloading the 5 remaining good cells. Another problem could be that the alternator is on its way out and causes the battery to be repeatedly discharged at idle and, of course, repeatedly recharged at higher revs, creating excessive heat.

Either of these could cause low voltage at idle, resulting in accessories not functioning properly.

Should be easy to troubleshoot by testing the alternator and/or getting a new battery. At 4 years old, you'll probably want a new one soon anyway.

^both of those comments make good sense to me. and since a bad battery is the best case scenario i'll try a new one. hawker/odyssey seems like good stuff so i'll see what happens with another. thanks

The battery's the most likely culprit, anyway.
