Battery Cables Help

Ok take it easy about the search button. Now that's out of the way let me begin. My negative terminal is smoked, rusted trough and cracked ( the wire and the shieldind not just the terminal) I have a new optima redtop which is half my problem. First how long is the negative wire approx. I 'm going to a hi fi shop to purchase 0-1 guage tomorrow. Secondly the fuse box connected to the positive terminal does not really fit right across the battery which pulls the postive lead off the terminal after some driving ( yes i crank it down ) it's just the angle doesn't work. Any one have any suggestions? If I wanted to replace my positve wire what is involved, length of material etc. I am not interested in relocating the battery at this time.

Thanks in advance for all the help

0-1 gauge might be overkill, unless you have some subwoofers and a big amp (400W+). If you're concerned about the ground, be sure your ground cable is making a good connection; clean the terminals and sand the paint off of the chassis mounting point. The negative cable is about 10-12" long, if I remember correctly.

The positive terminal is connected to the nearby fuse box by a rigid piece of metal, not a wire, so you don't have much room to maneuver there. It sounds like your battery might be the wrong size.

Good luck,

Hey I got my red top in...I had to bend the metal bracket some...Let me take a pic of it and show you....Also--same as I plan on doing...on the pos+ side terminal the connector tha touches the battery comes off of the metal bracket. You can just undo it and make a 2-3" piece of wire(maybe some of your extra wire from your negative side) to fill in the gap! Just my two ¢!

You can use a tape measure and measure the lengths for what you need.

Get yourself some copper or brass sheet - heavier size such as 16 gauge - just a little piece, and make an extender for the fuse box. I purchased fancy gold plated battery terminals when mine died. These things have extra cable holes where you can install an extra ground. I installed a high current feed into the cab for my amateur radio as well. I flattened out the +ve tab on the fuse box and used a screw on the fancy terminal to connect it. You can also see my extra ground cable on the -Ve term.

just something I got from Pepboys...I had this in my TII...If the terminals were reversed you shouldn't have a fitment problem--unless mine (Model #9083547) is the same model as yours.

Edit Part #34/78

yep 34r is the battery with reverse terminals, fitment is better but that damn fuse box is just a little too short. People don't pay for the 34r cause it's extra money (at least here in Canada) Anybody replace the positive cable?

i would say now is a good time to tackle a battery relocation project. ditch the redtop and get a yellow top and buy a battery relocation kit from jegs.com. doing a relocation to the rear bins is pretty simple but just tedious with taking off the interior pieces inside the car.

I have. It's not very hard, if you've got experience with that sort of thing. On the other hand, this is not something that you want to learn by trial and error. I get the feeling that if you were mechanically inclined, you would have already taken it apart and figured it out.

Take it to a car stereo shop, they should have someone who's skilled at wiring.
