batteries

My battery is about dead in my car...just wondering what batteries you all recommend. I recall seeing one that is silver through the base and has a yellow top...apparently a really expensive batter (100 bucks or so)...

what makes one battery better than the other? I know the 100 dollar one only had a 2 year warranty whereas i could get 60 dollar ones with a 4 year warranty.

You really should do a search - this topic is covered weekly.

However, I just ordered a Westco Miata battery to replace my dying stock one. Can be had for about $85 shipped online. 10 lbs lighter than stock. It is sealed so can be used in a relocation project if so desired (and fits in the rear bins without cutting). 475 CCAs, which should be more than enough for the FD. Just shy of the 500 CCAs of the Optima Yellow Top (which needs extensive cutting to fit in the rear bins and is slightly more expensive). Also has correctly reversed terminals for an FD.

anyways, thanks for the info. yeah it was the optima that is so expensive and I couldn't think of the name. any real advantage to using that?

I recommend Jeff's 51R battery tray and a 51R battery from your local auto parts store or a nicer Optima.

A lot of people are using the Optima and it seems to work well for pretty much everybody. Fewer people use the Miata battery, though I don't recall seeing any reported problems with it. I went with the Miata bettery because I want to do a relocation project without cutting the bins.

Turbojeff's tray and a $40 dollar 7-year warranty 51R battery from Costco. 1.5 years of auto-x and HDPEs with no issues (other than I sunk the top of the battery in a little bit from tightening the hold-down bar too much on a 100F track day).

well it appears my battery is fine...it's an alternator problem. I have a bosch battery...guess it's time to look at another alternator.

Just get the alt rebuilt at a local alt and battery shop. Mine cost me $65 for a rebuild. The reman on the net was about $200 and a used one on here was between $75-150.

I just swiched to the Optima Yellow top 51R from the Hawker PC 680. My PC 680 would drain just after 1-2 days of sitting and that got really frustrating.

I've had a pedestrian (non-Optima) 51R and a PC680, and the 51R holds a lot more juice. With the 51R, the car generally functions the same as it did with the stock battery. With the PC680, you've got to be very careful about draining the battery or you could get stranded.

51 is a Honda battery. 51R is a reversed terminal Honda battery. The FD has a reversed terminal battery. Optima is a brand, 51 is a type or classification.

Do "NOT" use water filled battery's in the FD!
