Bathurst Type X?

So, I'm the new owner of a 95 Bathurst X. I've tried to do some prodding and combing through the search results, but I can't really find anything specific about the jdm model (plenty of info about the Australian one, though.)

Does anyone happen to know if it has the dual oil coolers of the Type-R?

It strikes me as a step up given the fact it has no rear seats, as well as the red leather seats. Just curious as to if anyone happens to know any more in depth information, as I'm not coming across much aside from production numbers of 777 and the stuff I've already mentioned.

I'm assuming you don't have the car yet since it will take all of 2 seconds looking in the front of the car to see how many oil coolers it has....

We have been discussing Type X on another thread.

The bins were likely a later swap in. Someone may have traded for the red rear seats ( I did, but not bins).

There is probably a separate brochure for the Type X given its non-traditional launch time. I have not found it yet.

Brain Long, in his book, gives the specs. (Check the references in the Wkikipedia write-up; or get Brian Long's book off of Amazon.)

Dual oil cooler was likely as the car started as a Type R.

However, some of the specialty cars loose their unusual features before even getting to auction.

Do you have the dark gunmetal Bathurst X wheels?

For additional reference.

Page 157 has the description.

No, I don't. If looking right at it from that angle were do-able right now I would have done that already, haha.

The car comes with rims, but I believe they are aftermarket. The OEM Efini wheels they are putting on are the regular color. As far as the back storage bins does anyone know for sure if they came with those? I know most jdm models were four seaters, but not entirely sure about this one due to its nature.

No Bins Four You

P. 157 of Brian Long's book RX-& Mazda's rotary engine sports car

I have a set of the red leather Bathurst X rear seats, including side bolsters. Let me know if you are interested n trading for the bins.

The new spolier referred to is the Version 4 "Whaletail". I also have one of those from a Bathurst X.

All-in all with the variations the white Bathurst X must have looked pretty impressive in the showrooms.

Is your prospect black or white or?

The white car, with red seats and dark rims presaged (by five years) the later Type RZ that would morph into Spirit R. Refer to the schematic above

Bin there and gone.

According to Long's book the first use of the Bathurst name was on a Type R - II in Japan (late 1994). It seems that car was a two seater (so bins) and had blue tinted glass. Only 350 were made. Status of the two oil coolers is not mentioned, but maybe can be assumed. to be there. No big deal you can get a used set of twin oil coolers for about US$400 (check rotarypwr on Ebay). The right hand side cooler is usually harder to come by, as is the longer front oil line that runs right from the block. It is longer than the base which normally runs left and down to the left cooler.

Thank you for posting that! I really appreciate it! I'm going to have to pick that book up.

I may be interested in trading, actually, to return the car to full OEM spec. My storage bins, etc are all black, and the car itself is BB. I think I got somewhat lucky with it, to be honest. Flying out tomorrow to pick it up. 49,000 miles 99-102 compression on all faces, and It's been fully looked over by a reputable shop in that area. Grade 4 car overall.

Interesting. I thought I remember the name Bathurst being applied to basically all RX-7's in japan at a certain point, with only some of them being a step up in trim level. Someone who has the book and far more expertise on JDM models than I do will chime in here I'm sure.

My friend has the BB BX. I have been pilfering various BX parts from him in exchange for dubious amounts of C$ and DIY rx7 DVDs.

Post up your best picks here:

I just received the brochure in the mail. It's a bit on the backlog before I can scan it and get a high quality upload, so I snapped some quick pics for you. Not sure if this will give you the information you need, but this is what I have from the brochure.

That actually gives me a great head start. I need to source the OEM wheel. That looks to be one with an Airbag, at least to me.

Edit: It also has the 96 tails?? Mines a MY 1995, and has the 96+ tails, I'm wondering if that brochure is for a later year B-X or if the 95's had the circular taillights.

Redbul May 1, 2021 08:36 PM

Yup. It is the following yeart. Based on the type RB. Nevermind. They only made 700 of those. Still very nice!

I have a Momo wheel from a 97 Type R. Not in the best shape. Prize is the Type RZ wheel of that era. No Airbag. Very nice.

Very nice brochure. Thanks for sharing!

I suspect they used much of the same brochure for the 95.

You can partly see the B pillar decal in several of the pictures.

SwappedNA May 1, 2021 10:13 PM

Can anyone chime in to clarify if the factory MOMO wheel on the B-X has an airbag?

Redbul May 2, 2021 02:14 AM

97 Type R Momo did.;96 BX shows it in the brochure. That is a strong indication.

j9fd3s May 2, 2021 09:22 AM

this is what the parts catalog says, its worth it just for the bunk translation.

That is really interesting. The MOMO wheel I've seen on some B-X's is almost like the wheel you'd see on a late model 180sx w/airbag. The one listed in the parts catalog you linked appears to not have one at all. I'm actually on my way right now to pick the car up (about 30,000 feet in the air) So I'll do a thorough look over. It looks like it doesn't come with an airbag, but I think the airbag sensors would likely be in the same place in the engine bay as the USDM models if it did. So I'll have a look.

Thank you for going through the parts catalog for that, by the way.

Redbul May 2, 2021 01:23 PM

The picture of the Momo in the brochure. You can see it says "airbag'.

The TRG X is not the Bathurst.

You might have on aftermarket wheel on that car. Or if you have the Type RZ no airbag version, good for you. If you do I wonder if you have an earlier Bathurst there (the "Blue-tint Glass" one. If yes. Congratulations! The bins are a hint that you might. It so congratulations again.

Buy a giant box of bubble wrap on your way to pick it up (available at uhaul).

If you have the VIN number, someone here will run a search for you. However, the earliest bathurst might not mention the bathurst features on the VIN plate. (see drivers door jam). Post a picture of it (please).

agreed, its not the lest confusing listing i've seen but based on the brochure, i'd think the parts catalog would consider it an RB. its a Type RB Bathurst X...

Redbul May 3, 2021 01:38 PM

There is the 94 "blue tint" Bathurst, Next the 95 Type R Bathurst X; then the 96 Type RB Bathurst X. And then on from there.

Odd that they call several successive versions a "debut" edition.

The Type R Bathurst R (2001) is the pick of the litter, (imo).

As someone pointed out, in the Version 6 case (circa 2002) they simply put the Bathurst name on the base Type RB. (Although it seems a few Type RB were also produced. Including Brian Long's Innocent Blue MIca, which he claims was one of the last FD made.) (Maybe they ran out of Bathurst stickers?)

There should be a Bathurst X version of this out there somewhere.

Redbul May 3, 2021 02:31 PM

Note side bol

Note side bolsters. Those don't show in the Type RB Bathurst X brochure (iirc). So maybe particular to the TR BX. The rear interior quarter panels were black though, unlike the USDM red leather interiors (to my knowledge).

I have the top section as well, but it is rather sunbaked (read 1920's garage find).

Redbul May 3, 2021 02:35 PM

I have these as well. A little more shopworn now and sans tires.

Needles in the haystack

Here is a local car that, judging by the wheels, is likely a Bathurst X. No decal on the B-pillar. Rear spoiler and seats have been replaced by non-spec.

White helmet guy is passenger.

Still had the wheels on it when last seen (Winter 2017).
