I have the "1995 Model Year" brochure published in April 1995. I assumed it was the Version 4 launch brochure because the Type RZ, Type R-S and Touring X have the whaletail. However, it indeed shows a Type R Bathurst, which shows the "R1/R2" wing. It seems all the models have the 255hp motor. But they show the black rings for the gauges. My guess now is that these are all late model Version 3 cars but sporting some of the Version 4 attributes.

There seems to have been four Version 3 parts catalogues. Nether the first nor the last mention a Type R Bathurst. Maybe the middle ones do.

Being a special edition, the 1995 Type R Bathurst X had its own special brochure, shown here: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati.../#post12497068

I think I have acquired one of these models, but I am not 100% sure. Can one of you link me to an active tool that will tell me based on the Chassis number/vin?

Ahh. It says its a TYPE RB BATHURST X

Redbul 01-29-24 11:56 PM

Type RB Bathurst X was introduced in 1986. Although it has some of the feartures of the 1995 Type R Bathurst X it was otherwise closer to the base model in other aspects.

However, it was the first Bathurst produced as a "regular" run car rather than a limited edition.

That being said a Type R Bathurst also shows up in the 1995 literature from time to time.

But is ignored in the final parts catalogue.

The Type RB Bathurst X essentially used the same brochure as the Type RB Bathurst X. Maybe the steering wheel was upgraded.

its either hiding in that catalog under an assumed name, or there was a separate sheet for it.
plenty of examples of both from stuff that came here.

Looks like only 500 where made (that year) and from what I understand, are the only trim to get rear seats?

Redbul 01-30-24 07:31 PM

Almost all trims had rear seats except RZ.

The first Bathurst had rear bins and RZ colour tinted rear window. Bins show up in later Bathurst, but these were likely swapped in.

In Jaoan, two seaters where taxed more heavily, so having bins was a status symbol.

FDbyadoom 01-31-24 07:36 AM

Huh. Good to know. Interesting. I just saw one of the charts linked above and it only listed that Bathurst as the model coming with rear seats. So is there anything special about the Trim I listed then? Car def has a lot of blank switches in it.

IIRC It's really just a base model with a Bathurst race theme hence the missing switches and stuff. They are lighter than typical models because of the lack of options and more collectable due to the limited production. Nothing special as far as performance upgrades like the RZ

Run your vin by autocheck.jp for $35. Should help.

Here is the equipement package details for Version 4 cars. Bathurst X is second to last column. It does not say Type RB but rather "Llimited Edition".

Do you have one for version 3 cars? My Vin starts with a 3

Redbul 01-31-24 08:12 PM

A table in the front of the parts manual sets out the basic differences between the different types. The Bathurst X closely resembles the Type RB. IN the back of the catalogue is an appendix which lists which Type RB parts were replaced. The intro-paragrap states the X is substantially based on the Type RB. It then lists about 60 changes. However, a large portion of the changes are for all the red pieces that replaced black, including screw covers, seat plastics, and on and on.

Here is the table from the final Version 3 parts catalogue. It shows to Bathurst editions. The very first was based on the Type-R2 and was called the Type R2 or RII Bathurst. It was essentially a Type R2 with a B Pillar decal of the Bathurst Racetrack (in Australia). Later in the year The Type R Bathurst X came out and was based on that Versions Type R. Not listed is the Type R Bathurst that shows up in Version 3 sales brochures, but not in the parts catalogue.

As you may know, FDs won the Bathurst endurance race in Australian three years in a row. Mazda seized on that for their markeeting.

FD sales went quite soft into 1995 and Mazda was throwing all sorts of versions at the market. There may have been more mixing and matching of features. Also individuals probably started swapping in features on their own.

Redbul 01-31-24 08:55 PM

According to the final parts catalogue, no Type RB Bathurst X existed for Version 3 production run. However, it may have come and gone within the year and so does not show up.

Again autocheck.jp will Likely shed more light on what was going on.

Curiously, the appendix in back of the Version 3 catalogue sets out the differences between the Bathurst X and the Type RB.:dunno:
