It does sound like you are new to 7s, as that as much as I love mine, I HATE the way it sounds. After my third cat-back(and hearing numerous other combinations), I'm tempted to go back to stock to shut it up.

In fact, I can fully justify spending $35K for a 3 rotor conversion, just for the sweet sound that makes. But then again, sound is subjective, so what appeals (or does not) to me, may not for another.

Here is a good thread to read, I think with some sound clips in there somewhere:

Eh, acceptable. This is my current exhaust. Maybe I'll get off my lazy butt and record it. I heard (maybe propraganda) that the side exhaust ports of the new Renesis changes the exhaust sound (for the better). Hope someone figures out if a Renesis based rebuild for the FD is possible, in time for my next engine rebuild.

I heard the Renesis at SS4 and that thing does sound sweet as hell. A lot like a Porsche flat-6 imho, very turbine-like with a little growl, but none of the bumble-bee thing that goes on with current rotaries. Not sure how it will sound with the exhaust opened up, but in stock form it sounds very refined, smooth, with some bite.

THe renesis uses very interesting exhaust ports and i'm sure the peripheral intake ports do somethign ot the exhaust note as well. There is also some sort of variable timing of how the secondary intake ports are turned on as well. Basically, the renesis is a very different monster from the 13B.

i say that if sound and exhaust tone is important to you, keep the stock catalytic converter... DO NOT get tempted by all of these guys and swap it for a midpipe or even a high flow cat. if you are going for performance, clearing the whole exhaust track out is the way to go, but it is definitely not pleasing to the ears. i think straight exhausts seem to have a really low tech, primitive sound to them, in my opinion at least. i am considering buying another stock cat just because the straight through exhaust sounds so obnoxious, but i have removed my airpump so that would not work out too well. the only compliments i get about the sound of my exhaust are retarded ricer boys at the local ricer parking lots and jack in the box. before i removed the catalyst, i thought it sounded pretty sweet, and i had a downpipe and apex n1.

if i were to do it over again (which i might be doing soon), i would go with a quieter exhaust like the m2 dual or racing beat dual, and possibly throw in an extra straight through muffler like the borla xr1 for extra deep/quiet dampening. the sound that is so cool at first when you get a canister style exhaust like the n1 or blitz gets old fast, especially when your friends start to get into cars like beemers and benzes, and you are stuck with the "ricemobile."

okay, i will stop rambling now about loud exhausts and reasons to stay away from them, i feel like my dad and my prissy *** neighbors now... "why do you want your car to be so damn loud... you need to put a muffler on that thing, it is waking my *** up, all the way down the ******* block!!!"

WTF? Peripheral intake ports? It uses the 13B side ports and changes the exhaust ports to side.

5-year old Trust Sport Catback

is for sale for $80 at AIM Tuning. It's too loud now that the stuffing's all blown out of it. I've had it since March 1997, and have finally replaced it with a RB dual tip polished SS setup. I'm hoping the RB quiets the exhaust down a bit. I'm practically deaf from the Trust. FWIW, I have a DP and High Flow Cat... Go to www.aimtuning.com and contact Shane Benson.

I have the RB dual tip cb with Petit dp, mp and it sounds nice. Its not loud until the rpms reach 5k. But I should soon be getting my N1 dual just to switch up on the sound. I've had the same catback for the past 4 yrs on 3 different FD's.

I've noticed that any of the mufflers with the Y-pipe INSIDE the muffler (3" inlet and dual outlet mufflers) are the ones that give the lowest tones.

I currently have the really old Borla catback (discontinued) and everyone always tells me about how good it sounds, and I have no cats.

Why was the Borla discontinued? ...that sucks. I thought about making a custom Borla exaust using the XR-1 or maybe Edelbrok racing mufflers but no one makes the brackets that I know of.

I am using a Pettit exhaust with HKS DP and it sounds great. It's not weed wacker cause I still have the cat' so it's more motorboat but very deep. Drone noise only on vacuum. Gitls say they can recognize my car at least a block away. I can't tell it being that loud inside of it. I think mostly it's distinctive and then throaty load.

If the RE Amemiya dolphin was 1/2 the price, i'd consider than one over the Racing Beat.

Oops, i guess i got confused. The renesis motor has side exhaust and intake ports. The below is quoted from the mazda performance site.

This is quoted from mazda's performance website:
"Unlike previous mass-production rotary engines, which employed side intake ports and peripheral exhaust port, the naturally aspirated RENESIS has intake and exhaust ports in the side housings. This configuration eliminates overlap between the opening of the intake and exhaust ports, enhancing combustion efficiency. The intake ports are 30% larger and their timing has been changed to make them open sooner than in previous designs. Moreover, the exhaust ports open later, resulting in a longer power (expansion) stroke and providing radically improved heat efficiency."

Thumbs up He He

Personally speaking, I would go with the Apexi N1 Dual, sounds sweet with the stock setup (one of the few that do) but gets much throat'ier the more radical your engine gets.

Powder coated to keep the heat in the tube, and seriously sweet looking from behind. Doesn't make that bumbl-bee sound like the big cans that scrape the ground behind you when you hit a bump (don't get me wrong, titanium sparks look cool too!) or look like your oil filler cap is through your exhaust tip.

Clean sound, good looks, high performance, what more could you ask for?? If it gets too loud, you can always get the silencers (yeah right, too loud).

Apexi

Ok - Ive heard that the Apexi exhaust is loud - does this apply to both the single and dual, or is the dual a little more low-key?

Racing Beat is the way to go.

Also, on a more personal note, rotary engines sound way more crisp and powerful than its counterpart. A ******* badass sound comes forth when I blip the throttle in the higher rpm ranges. Sounds like a true racecar rather than those monstrous medieval American cars.

i know it was a dumb movie, but the red rx7 on fatf was a good sounding one imo. I liked that deep throaty sound and such. Didnt sound all riced out like the rest of the cars there. Some as deep and good as that if not better would be ideal.

The sound of the car from the movie (this applies to pretty much all movies and tv shows) was dubbed in afterwards, and I think everyone pretty much agreed that the sound samples they used were not from a rotary. I've heard a lot of exhausts and in general, the louder they are, the worse they sound, mho. It may be cool hearing a monster bridgeport with a wide open exhaust braap braap braap for a few minutes but I would go crazy having to drive one.

Arrow Well, up to you!!

I think that the N1 is the best for the note and ease of installation, maintenance/clearance (do make sure that it doesn't touch the plastic fender on the rear valence, will melt the **** out of it!!).

The tone is low and I can hear my turbos spinning, if I stand behind the car, through the exhaust. I just put in a bonz down-pipe and high-flow cat (dropped about 100lbs of catalytic crap!) but still working on finishing (down-pipe install is a bitch), will let you know how it sound with this setup. Bet that it will be awesome. Was really deep and ominous sounding before, bet it will be 10-times as loud (also with about 40 more hp!).

Where you at?? I am in Houston, if you are around then you can get an ear-full. Should be done with all the work Monday afternoon.

As for the movie Fast and Furious, I kinda liked it, a lot of the stuff was a little on the edge between real and fiction (nine second Jetta on streets????). The note the RX7 might have been real. There is so much that goes into the note that you need to know all the pluming before you can guess. Here is the build out on the F&F 1993 RX7

This car is from the fast and The Furious movie. It is a 1993 Mazda Rx7. It's fully built 13b rotary engine(motor capable of supporting up to 600hp), 3 mil apex seals huge street port, knight sports radiator, blitz front mount intercooler, blitz blow off, blitz twin filters, cosmo fuel pump, tuned ecu, nos fogger system (120 extra hp) standard standard standard veilside andrew ef`s bfgoodrench schorcher t/a (blue) apex el gauges, apex el tach, apex avc-r boost controller, sparaco racing harness, sparaco pico racing seat, veilside steering wheel, veilside shift ****, red neon spagetti light, twin nos 20lbs tanks, momo racing pedals full cll veilside body kit, veilside carbon fiber gt wing, re aminya japanese headlight conversion, custom formula racing red paint with graphic`s (no it is not the car from the movie although i have added some graphic`s from the movie) red under glow kit from street glow(not sceen in the pics) (2) alpine 12" type r subwoofers, (3) alpine v12 650watt amps, alpine cda-5755 cd player/dsp processor, stock speakers, upgraded speaker wire and amp wire, quinn 650 alarm with upgraded processor 4.2 11.168 500+ 180
