bad to hit rev limiter?
hey everyone
my set up is..
94 fd, bnr twins, dp, mp, rb dual tip, stock fuel, intake, and reman motor with ~1700 miles.
along with reliability mods, ast, koyo rad, intercooler etc..
what im wondering is..
Is it safe to hit the rev limiter with the clutch in? Such as when you are rolling down the street and "rev" the engine?
The reason I ask, is because when I do do this, it makes quite a show out back (big bang) and all of my friends that aren't really in to cars always ask me to do it. I however have no idea if this is bad for the car or not. I only do it when the car is FULLY warmed up, and only hit the rev limiter for half a second or so, and then drop down back to idle.

You really shouldn't be seeing "quite a show"...
You should be able to hold the engine at 8K forever. Remember the rotors are lazily turning at 1/3rd crankshaft speed. If you are having backfiring or anything else, you have a problem you need to get corrected.

I've been told that revving while not under load is always hard on a motor.
Are you getting the backfire / flames while holding at redline or just after you let off the gas. It seems pretty normal to backfire after you let off. But yeah, it should be smooth and steady as long as you are giving it gas/air.

If you aren't running cats with a DP/MP, backfire is pretty normal. Excessive backfire might be annoying and you could probably have it tuned out by leaning it out some more. I think baja was talking about a more stock set-up. IMO, you should be fine... though you might look like a douche doing it.

i meant that it backfired when I let off the gas. it usually backfires quite a bit, but only when im moving, and i ilke being able to do it while im just kinda sitting there.
i know that once i get pfc on and tuned this wont happen as much.

honestly i would leave it that way. with the rotary i would rather it be rich than to "lean it out"
btw. i rev my motor to 8 grand alot and i mena alot. the car runs better that way
and when u say backfire u mean "unburnt fuel"?

There is no real mass to these engines. They can actually rev MUCH higher with absolutely no adverse effects, but on a street car your accessories like your power steering pump, a/c, alternators, etc are part of the limiting factor. And...there isn't a whole lot of reason to rev any higher, as you are out of the power band anyway.
In both my FC and my FD, one of the 'fun' things I like to do is to have people in the car and just take it to redline whilst sitting. These little engines are like turbines in their smoothness. People always go, "Whoa! That is ******' wild! No way I'd do that in MY car!"

Hah, that reminds me. One time I was looking at an older mustang. The owner was like "man it runs like a freakin beast," starts it up and starts revving it, *BOOM!* A piston flys out, punching a hole through the motor and hood, and lands 50 ft away... He was so incredibly angy, I had to leave ASAP.

I dont think it is good to hit the rev limiter since the stock rev limiter cuts fuel(i believe and not spark) which makes the car run lean.
Now a two step cuts spark so you will run rich and build boost for a good launch.
I dont see a problem just holding it a a certain rpm since most of us have seen videos and heard it is ok to rev them forever since at the mazda schools they do the same demonstration put a brick on the pedal of an rx8 let it run till it runs out of gas and then put gas in it and it starts right up.
