I don't think so. You may want to review the shop manual. I think it's main purpose is bumping fuel pressure on hot starts as Arghx said.
Also, most likely the wiring is bad or the connector is bad, the sensors are really hardy.

Whilst on the subject of this sensor, I,ve removed this sensor so there's nothing plugged into the connector plug. Will this have any adverse effect on the running of the car? I've got a PFC but the car is off the road at the moment and im not is a position to start the engine just yet.
