Backfiring? Newbie question :p
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum... I just picked up a 1994 RX-7 touring and have a couple questions about it. It has a modified exhaust system, aftermarket downpipe, midpipe, and catback exhaust. I'm in Iowa, luckily, so not having a catalytic converter isn't illegal. Anyway, I was up around 6k rpms in 3rd gear when I saw a cop a ways up so had to drop off the gas fast. As soon as I let up, I heard a single backfire. I've owned turbocharged cars before, but never an rx7, and haven't had modded exhaust before. Is some amount of backfiring normal? Everything else seems to be running fine.

Yeah, backfiring is pretty common. I have a DP and cat back and I get backfiring often. As long as it doesn't annoy you or the cop that is following you, don't worry, it doesnt really do any damage. Actually, with your setup, you may be shooting flames out your ****.
Welcome to the world of rotaries, where backfiring and exhaust flames are commonplace.

If you dont have any and really, really, really want flames, some people have rigged a spark plug (which requires a high power current) in the exhaust pipe and connected this circuit to a switch in the cockpit. Voila, instant flammage at the flip of a switch

It is a FEDERAL offense to remove your catalytic converter. If caught (by local, county or state police), you could be fined $20,000.
