B&M short shifter question

i recently installed a B&M short throw shifter and i like how short it is, but is it supposed to be hard to put it in gear? or is there like a break in thing where it gets easier and easier as i use it?

yes, it takes a bit of driving to get it broken in.

Any short shifter will increase the effort of the shift.

The shifter is a lever. If you have the pivot in the middle and then make one end of the lever shorter you no longer have to move it as far but you will have to push on it harder since you now have less leverage.

I haven't driven a short shifter yet that I liked; they're all notchy compared to the stock one. The reason is because the springs and forks in the tranny are designed to work with the stock shifter. Once you decide to make the shifter shorter it will automatically become stiffer and notchier. No free lunch.

I have the B&m short shifter too it works great it is harder to shift especially if you use an aftermarket shiftknob, I bought the rx-8 shift **** which is heavier than the greddy **** that I had and now shifter feels much better...

change your tranny oil with Redline synthetic and it will help a little bit, but its basically as Damon says.

kaiFD3s also has a point on the shift ****. When I got my car it had some ricy **** on there. I got a stock one (which is weighted) and it made a world of difference.

shifters

I have the Gotham short shifter, which is basically a cooy of the B&M from what I understand. After installation, the shifter was quite difficult to shift and notchy. I now have several thousand miles on it and the it shifts smoothy, but is still notcy, which I like.

Redline is a good suggestion - makes a big difference. Mine felt great the day I put it on. Feel is definitely an opinion thing but I wouldnt change back (permanently) for anything short of $2000 cash - and even then it would be a hard decision. Any of you rich, anti-shortshifter people out there ready to paypal me to join your ranks?

Also have the B&M and it became really knotchy...I think I have put a little over 1k on the OD and it smoothed out a little but not much....Maybe more driving will do the trick...But it does help with the missing 3rd thing and the knotchy feel is actually kinda cool.

My B&M is great. Have some problems with second when tranny is cold, but afterwards everything is great.

I'm using Redline also, and my tranny is brand new.

I just installed the B&M today and man does it shift hard. Since it has been a couple of months since this thread started, has anyone that has had this happen noticed a positive change in the ease of the throw? I have a razo shift **** that is weighted but I doubt that makes a whole lot of difference. I am going to switch everything over to redline as soon as it goes back in the shop soon.

Going to be doing the redline on the next shop visit. The car wont be driven much (under 100 miles) until then.

i have a B&M

i love it. no complaints. throws are WAY shorter, and it doesnt make it any harder to shift. the only time i've missed a gear with it is when my girlfriend was leaning over the center console....uh for what reason i cant say why.

Just to update on my B&M....when you first install it, I highly recommend using the stock shift **** for the break in period. I put on an aftermarket RAZO and shifting was extremely rough, I came home today and installed the stock and it helped alot.
shawn- have an appointment with a local shop to do the redline...great group of guys...they dont have it in stock but they said they order any fluid on the market if the customer wants it (at the cost of the fluid). Lets hear it for the few good guys left.
