AVC-R install with restrictor nipples

Hi all-

The questions:

I recently had my turbos rebuilt by Majestic (they did a great job, btw). I put everything back together, but I'm spiking pretty badly now.

I've double-checked all my vaccuum hoses, and am reasonably certain everything is correct. The car runs great other than the spiking at WOT. I didn't have this problem before the rebuild, but my turbos may not have been working that well back then.

To install an AVC-R with nipple restrictors do I need to drill out the wastegate nipple for it to work properly or will it work with the restrictor intact? The precontrol nipple gets capped so I shouldn't have to drill it, correct? Are there any tricks to avoid metal bits in the system after drilling?

Background:

My only engine mods are a cat back and downpipe.

In cold weather I spike to 13 or 14 before quickly settling down to 10 or 11. I get another spike at transition.

Though it seems a little odd at this point I think I need to install a boost controller. I didn't really expect to have to install one this soon, but I can't find any other problems.

Thanks!

First, have you run the AVC-R with it turned off? You should see just 7psi - if it's more, something is goofy.

The original "A" turbos had the restrictor pills in the vacuum lines. The later C turbos had them in the boost reference ports - the part that sticks out of the side of the compressor housing.

If you do have C turbos or have a compressor housing with the pills in there, pull the Y-pipe off, stuff a rag into the primary turbo's outlet, then drill the pills out. They should drill out really easily and quickly, I think they're just brass. Then, blow out any shavings and maybe use some brake cleaner to flush the holes out to make sure it's all clean and re-assemble.

If you don't have pills in there, something else is wrong.

I haven't run it with the AVC-R turned off because it isn't installed (or even purchased) yet. I just got the turbos back in the car recently and wasn't expecting them to be spiking as much as they are.

They are C turbos. I just wanted to make sure I actually have to drill the restrictors out for AVC-R to work properly. I don't want to drill if I don't have to.

I guess I'll drill the restrictors and see how it boosts before buying the AVC-R. I should see 7 psi with little to no spike with no restrictors in the lines assuming everything is working properly, correct? Or should I still expect to see some spike?
