Autometer Temp Sensor Placement

I just got all my gauges in from summit, and i am about to do a load of work on my baby.

Boost (M)
Water Temp (E)
Oil Pres (M)
EGT (E)
Replace T-Stat with Mazda OEM ( I swear by OEM on this part)
Replace Gaskets
Install 3 gauge A-Piler
Install SMIC
Install Intake

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has installed the electric version of the water temp gauge, and if so where did you install the sensor (1/8mpt). I want to keep the stock gauge working also. Was thinking of Drilling and taping the water pump housing. But the only really good places are on the worng side of the t-stat. Can install the sensor on the outside of the t-stat (From Motor,T-stat,Sensor,To Rad) or would my temps be off to much do to the fact that there is only water movement when the t-stat is open.

Any help or pictures would be nice. Thanks

Great work dgeesaman I follow your directions when I install mine but why you dont go the wire from passenger side and then back from stereo and down from the dash like harness and then to drive side so you dont have to remove all this stuff.
Again Great work do you have and other pdf files ???

If you have 1/8" NPT, I think DaleClark's set-up will work as well. Very easy to do in the TB coolant line. I'm happy and gives accurate readings.

^Long thread but post #36 has pics and the list of fittings, ~$5.00.

If you drill the radiator or you install the sensor on the output of radiator is wrong?

I routed it that way to follow the boost gauge line.

Just one pecaution, I wouldn't recommend using teflon tape on an electric gauge sending unit. The sender needs to be grounded for the gauge the read accurately and the teflon tape can act as an insuator. Instead use a metallic antiseize like Jet Lube or Permatex anti seize.

If you install the electric gauge sending unit in the TB line, you'll need to install a grounding wire to the fitting you use.

Without the teflon tape, I fear there would be a leak.

As for being insulated, I believe that's how it has to work. But I don't have the instructions with me to verify that. (So it's relying on the ground plane of the car)

If the sender is of the single wire type then the outside metal case of the sender must be grounded. This typically is done for you just by screwing the sender into some metal part of the engine. If you wrap the sender in teflon tape however you've just insulated it from ground.

These things are all NPT threads; that means pipe thread. Pipe threads are tapered so that tightening them makes a leakproof seal. No teflon tape required.

I put mine in the Throttle body coolent line. Went in quick and easy, with about 10 bucks in parts from Home Depot. Was also able to get sender bung to mount perfect and water tight.

According to these directions on the Autometer website, one should "Use Teflon tape on all pipe threads"
http://www.autometer.com/download_instruction/0629A.pdf

However, it appears to be a 2-wire setup. Mine is a one-wire setup. I used teflon tape between the outer case and sensor (like I'm supposed to), but also between the outer case and water pump housing. I'll have to dig up the installation instructions since mine must be different.

With a 2 wire setup it's a non-issue; one of the wires is ground and one is signal. WIth a single wire setup the body of the sender must be grounded in some manner.

^Yup. My DEFI was also. No need to ground the sensor.
