autometer fuel level gauge

I bought a gauge cluster online with autometer gauges. I have the tach, speedo and boost working.
My only problems are water temp and fuel level... I havent tried the road speed but I assume it will work. The fuel level is just sitting on E. I connected it to the wire that appeared to go to the fuel level sender. How does the fuel level sender work? Any help would be appreciated. The water temp isnt much of an issue, you cant tap into the haltech temp sensor b/c it draws too much current so I guess I'll just buy a new sensor. This is for a 93 touring with haltech.
