Dog boxes don't have to be sequential... most aren't.

I thought dog boxes were manual transmissions except without synchros or helical forward gears.

Dog boxes use "dogs" or "lugs" instead of splines and synchronizers. Clack, you're in gear.

Has nothing to do with the cut of the gears... dogboxes typically use straight-cut gears, but that's only because it's a race tranny and straight cut gears are a bit stronger. It doesn't matter if the transmission whines like an electric drill. The cut of the gears is independent - in fact, some cars have come with straight cut gears from the factory, and they were still synchro trannies. Likewise, you can guy dogbox gearsets with helical gears (because they are simply modified stock gears and not all-new pieces).

Loud as all hell, if I believe. Theres a guy around here that goes to the meets with a sequential racing tranny... I think the tranny is louder than the motor and the fuel pump is almost as loud!

They are hard to drive. You pretty much have to shift when the car is moving. It's really difficult when it's stopped. You also have to be really "aggressive" or deliberate when shifting - no messing around. Takes lots of practise.

Well to your interest here is what the HKS "dog box" transmission sounds like while shifting. Well you basically have to bang into each gear and match the rev and that is very critical or else you will hear the nasty grinding and you don't want that.

You know how most cars make that funky whining noise when they're driven in reverse? That's because generally reverse is a straight-cut gear which is the same as what is used in most dog boxes. So if you don't mind the car sounding like it's in reverse ALL THE TIME then I guess you might go for it. I can't see much of a reason that you'd want to put a dog box in a street car though.
