Automatic 3rd gen

Hi this is my first post. Does anyone know about Automatic 3rd generation RX-7's. I've been looking for a 3rd gen and all i can find in my area is automatics. Are they pretty fast? What about automatic transmission reliability? I looked at 1 today with a new engine put in by rotary performance out in Manassas VA. Thanks in advance.

If you plan to race then I wouldn't get an auto. Are you plannig on getting a FD just to put basic mods (intake, ic, dp, exhaust) then it's cool. Other wise find a manual if you want big power.

Thanks. what it comes down to is, I've owned 2 1st gens and recently i've been bitten by the rotary bug again. I guess i'll hold out until i find a decent 5 speed. I see pfsupercars has a few for sale, but should i really pay that much for a car 8 or 9 years old? thanks again.

Some people do ask too much for their cars. I bought my '93 R1 with 50K miles for 15K. That was a fair deal for both parties IMO. Also, I wouldn't buy an auto, but that is just me.

I bought an auto several weeks ago, and I love it. I dont scream out of a stop b/c I want to keep the transmission good (original, almost 80K miles) without revving in nuetral and dripping it into 1st, etc...or crap like that. It's still fast, belive me. The reason(s) I went with an auto is that I wante an FD badly, had wanted one for a long time, and realized how long it would have taken to get the extra several thousand (or more) for a manual in the same condition. As it stands, I got a badass deal. I also use it as my daily driver, which made a big part (I looove manuals but haaaate them in traffic....) If this is going to be your "car" car, dont completely discount auto. There are some really satisfied auto drivers here. Then, when you are finally redy, talk to someone like George Dodsworth at Sevenspeed about switching the transmissions. The cost should be about the same as th eprice difference. On the other hand, if this is to be your fun/secondary car, just save and get a manual.

It will be my daily driver. I'm in NoVA, and i just got a job in Tysons Corner. about an hour one way. So I may just end up getting the auto. at least it has a brand new engine . HKS Turbo timer and boost controller. If i can get them to lower the price i may pick it up next week. thanks for the help.

Ok. i got to drive the car today. It has a brand new engine, however, it seem slike something is wrong with it. when you push on the gas it starts of really slow then after about 10 seconds it comes alive. It almost seems like it wants to shut off. Does anyone have any idea what would cause it to act like that?

Where is VA are you? March 30-31 at VIR (near Danville) is a huge rotary meet. Maybe bring the car by the meet? I'll be there and will be happy to help you check it out.

Btw, I've put over 50k miles on my R1 (5spd daily driver) in the last 3 yrs w/no regrets. If you get a alushbox (auto) you'll regret it. Talk to Kenny (XSeLR8nRX7) here on the forum--he just sold a sweet auto FD to find a 5spd.

If the car seems like it wants to stall or is barely holding its idle, something needs to be fixed. It probably has a vac leak or a hose is leaking.

But i may just hold out and try to get the yellow 5 speed.
