Auto Trans Cooler in Place of Oil Cooler

So my passenger side oil cooler is cracked and leaking. Jeff at Rotory Power USA told me that the auto trans cooler is basically the same part. Does anyone one have any experience with this? IS it true?

the transmission cooler was located inside the radiator, unless you're referring to using an auto radiator and using that as the oil cooler i would suggest against it. not enough volume and not enough cooling. perhaps some models used a factory style oil cooler but again, it wasn't designed for that purpose.

just buy a used stock cooler and be done with it.

The automatics came with an internal cooler in the radiator like you mentioned but they also came with a dedicated transmission cooler that was mounted where the R1 passenger cooler would be. I can't remember if it ran directly to the trans or was in series with the radiator. In any case there was a jumble of hardlines that I ripped out after doing my 5spd swap.

Check my thread posted above.

Just get a second hand oilcooler. Theyre cheap and plentiful.

Check the 3rd gen for sale section. I know there are some there. Or PM fritz flynn.

I found like a dozen active threads using the search feature for "oil cooler"

If you happen to damage the engine radiator in the automatic car, beware. As I found out, they are very difficult to find now. The manual one will not swap in, as the auto car has a trans cooler inside the engine radiator, in addition to one on the side of the front bumper.

I was able to swap the auto end tanks and internal cooler onto a manual radiator core. The manual has less fins per inch than the auto core, but it still works fine.

Dunno, someone may want to know via the search function one day....

or if you run into that problem again just run an external transmission cooler in front of the stock manual radiator.

that is how i did one customer's car but i do not recall his having it tied into an auxiliary passenger side oil cooler.
