you cannot because it does not have a thermostat built into it that is the same as the oil cooler. also the lines will be a different size. also the core efficiency is probably alot lower and would be little advantage to using it.

It doesn't need a t-stat built in, the driver's side cooler already has that.

In any case, the auto tranny cooler and the passenger side oil cooler do have different part numbers, so no, I doubt you could use it (I don't know about the fittings but safe to say they are probably different).

Bullshit...you can use it. I researched this when I did my 5 speed conversion and ended up running 10an lines to the old auto cooler first, then over to the stock ( driver side ) oil cooler and back to the engine. Works just fine. That auto cooler is the same as the R1 pass side cooler except it has barber fittings for the auto tranny lines instead of the 21MM ( I believe ) slip on fittings. Lowered my oil temp down to 170f using both.

Yes, you can use it and good luck.

Tom

running the oil through the 2nd cooler should always be after the thermostat not before. the thermostat is there to keep the engine at a certain temperature. bypassing it is not a good idea, of course your engine will be running cool all the time, that doesnt mean its a good thing, especially if your not racing the car.

so since i have to change the lines anyways i could make it go thru the tranny cooler first then it would solve that problem.

I suppose it could work, but the oil temperature is controlled fairly well with the stock oil thermostats, and I would not risk it when there is properly operating equipment out there that is available.

I would assume the trans cooler would run at a different temp than the engine oil is set at.

Do you have a pic you could post, I personally have never even seen a pic of a FD auto trans cooler. Is it look identical to the oil cooler besides fittings?

Does it have a built in oil temperature regulator like the manual single/duel oilcoolers?

Perhaps you could have it sent in to adjust the reg to match the stock oilcooler temp.

it looks the same. i don't see why it would matter. it just like if you would put on a after market kit on that wouldn't be controled by the ecu. and on the factory dual coolers do both coolers have a regulator in them?

Of course both have a reg on them. If it didn’t t would automatically cycle oil through them the way it is set up. I believe it runs from the engine to the pass cooler then to the driverside. If the passenger didn’t have a reg it would flow through the pass side unrestricted, and proceed to driverside.

From what I understand when the engine is not at temp the parts are getting “relatively” a lot of wear because they have not expanded to spec and are rubbing against surfaces much harder than when at temperature where they are supposed to be the majority of there service life.

So it sounds pretty important to have the engine get to operating temp as soon as possible and be able to control it finitely to keep it in its operating range.

You wouldn’t have a pic to post of it would you? I am interested to see how identical it really is.

If it has a reg, I am sure you can have it set to the correct temperature by a company that was posted on here a little while ago.

I've used the auto cooler as an oil cooler and have no problems. I've also tracked the car at mid-ohio with no ill effects and also do regular autocross events (about 2 a month). They both have the built-in thermostats, but the auto tranny cooler opens a few degrees later then the oil cooler which is no big deal according to oem specs.

Good info!

Can the thermostats be swapped? If someone was concerened about the higher temp, this may be an option.
