Audi S4 power delivery, how does it compare to RX7???

Im selling my chipped S4 and getting a FD. I was just wondering how the delivery of power is compared to the S4. Anyone drove both? How is the acceleration on the highway in 5th in an FD. Thanks for any thoughts.

Depends on your chip. Our MTM S4 pulled much harder than my seq. RX-7 until about 4500 rpms. After that, the 7 pulls harder, all the way to redline. The MTM chip was programmed for a broad flat torque curve and not "peak" power. It significantly rolled off by 6000 rpms. Even if I was "power" shifting, I'd usually shift the S4 by 6500. The RX-7 you want to be dancing with the rev limiter. Of course the MTM gives you full boost by 1800 rpms.

In simple terms, when I raced an S4 on the freeway with my non-sequential turbos, the S4 got walked.

the s4 is an awesome car, tho ive only even test driven a stock one (ended up buying the a4 2.8l v30 instead :P) the power delivery on the s4 i drove was a lot more linear then my stock fd it also seemed slower. so while the highly reponsive s4 turbo spools up quickly and felt more like a n/a engine, once the rx7 starts to spool it doesnt let up and it pull like a freight train all the way past redline even. also if you get a big single turbo conversion like quite a few fd owners the pull is even crazier and really puts you back in you seat that is of course if you wanna wait a bit longer for the kick, but it could be worth it.

I say, if you could afford it, get the more reliable, less maintenance required, more comfortable S4. Just don't expect to pull on any FD's until you can push at least 300 AWHP.

I am glad to see that you are trading up.

The FD will make your S4 look and feel like your grandmothers lincoln continential.

I have both in my garage now..

S4 = great highway automobile...I use my car for daily driving...It has H&R suspension, GIAC-Xchip.
Great car for tooling ard, torque everywhere...esp where you need it most for dialy driving.

FD = Now has ported engine and HKS T04R AP brakes and a whole lot of stuff. It has 300ish bhp on low boost setting. It's my track car so it's a very very different beast.

What are you looking for in a car? You need to ask yourself this question before you "step" up to an FD>

Uh.....that is a BIT of an exaggeration....lol!
I've driven an S4 and can tell you, there is more of a difference in FELT performance than REAL performance, at least in my humble opinion.

When I saw 170 mph in my near stock FD (dp and cb) 5th gear (from 140 until I shut her down at 170) felt like it took an eternity.

Comparably, I recently hit 170mph with the BNRs and all my other goodies, and it was like night and day. She ripped from 140 to 170 in what felt like nothing.......I wish I had been timing or datalogging so that I could've put a "40 to 170" time in my sig

I smoked an S4 a couple weekends ago. At first he didn't want any, but I stayed next to him. He finally punched it, I casually downshifted, and I could barely see his headlights after I was doing 130ish...

Still a super nice looking car, but I always thought they were faster (like comparable to the M5).

there's one in my garage too. i love to drive it as a daily driver. its still in stock form though. cossie has the giac-x chip, so he's pushing alot more boost (plus other goodies i'm sure). we got 4 inches of snow today, and the awd rocks. i've raced my brother on the freeway with just bolt-ons ~ 290rwhp and i pulled a few cars in each gear. as others have said, its totally different. lots of torque available through the rpm range. hey, where did he go anyway? hasn't said anything since his original post.

Both please! I'd love an S4 as a "daily driver." Wouldn't it be nice to have a $50,000 AWD sleeper sedan as a daily driver? I'd still take an FD any day, but the S4 has always been near the top of my must have list.

I haven't driven an S4, but I have gotten a ride in one. For some reason the passenger seat always feels quicker, but that thing felt like it had gobs of power. This was before I had the FD, but it felt fast. It compares favorably to a stock third gen, despite the weight difference. The FD is faster, but the S4 doesn't get embarrased as badly as most other sedans.
