I have a street port and I've been using the old Efi unit for a while now. 35,000 mile running 17lbs of boost w/ no problems. only thing is my stock turbos can't hang. starting to take a long time to spool. Need new turbos

[Mr. Scott] I'm given' 'er all she gott, Cap'n'. The meter is pegged:

This motor would have gone boom a long time ago using the stock ecu at those levels......

I've been wondering also if it's safe to run my Pettit Unlimited with a street ported engine, or if I should go with a PFC

there is another guy on here making about 340 at the wheels with a pettit computer and a ported motor....he flogs his car at the track routinely, so it can be done

when I get my ported engine back I plan to run the Pettit with a upgraded fuel pump and flowed stock injectors at no more than 13 psi.....if I want to go above that at some point in the future I will get the PFC and big injectors, but if I get around 330 at the wheels I'll be happy for now....I've blown enough cash lately

i drove mine for 3000 miles with a stock ecu, now have the pettit unlimited ecu. just keep the boost down and you'll be fine.

From what I've read ...

the stock ECU cannot retard the ignition to complement the increased crank angles of enlarged intake and exhaust ports; to truly take advantage of the port job.

AFIK the only way to retard the ignition is to use a programmable ECU and change the ignition maps. Even the Apex Power FC's base maps need to be modified; the PFC's ignition maps are too advanced for a motor with enlarged intake/exhaust ports.

Depending on your mods, you can probably get away with an unlimited Pettit ECU, but why go half way when you go all the way with a fully programmable ECU like a Haltech or Apex Power FC??

FWIW, I've read of one guy's Atkins ported motor blown with a stock IC, RB intake duct, Japan spec twins (13 psi), DP/High-Flo Cat/RB Dual, Walbro fuel pump, Pettit unlimited ECU.

The root cause was a lean AFR and oil starvation, AFIK.

my car ran fine on a streetport with the stock ecu..intake..dp..and catback...

when i added more fuel via a gforce ecu the car took off...it was not getting enough fuel to get great performance.

the car will run fine ...but it wont wake up until you tune it.

j

ps...dont buy any of the junk ecus...get a pfc at the very least...a haltech and motec as the step above that.

Funny..I thought the PFC was a step above the haltech and motec.

I know plenty of people running a pettit ECU with a ported engine, full exhaust and big IC, and the car rips, you just can't run more than 13

FWIW, I've read of one guy's Atkins ported motor blown with a stock IC, RB intake duct, Japan spec twins (13 psi), DP/High-Flo Cat/RB Dual, Walbro fuel pump, Pettit unlimited ECU.

the stock IC is what killed it.....trust me....that thing heat soaks when you idle the engine too long

I think it i possible to run 17psi and a streetport on the EFI unit. Rikki Got over 350rwhp on his ported motor using the EFI unit. Of course he wasn't hitting 17psi. But with bigger injectors, the EFI unit can hang. Of course the PFC or AEM or haltech, motec is better

More importantly, what does AFIK mean?

Yes, specifically the trailing spark. Don't know how many degrees. That's what I'm paying my engine builder to know

Exactly. The extra money you put into street porting won't be realized until you retard the ignition ie, delay the spark until all the intake air as been sucked into the combustion chamber from the enlarged ports

You COULD run a streetport witrh a stock ECU, but you'd have to have minimal other mods which would really negate the port.

You shouldn't run a stock ECU even if you had all the bolt-ons and no port. Don't be a cheapskate, and try to buy all the "power" mods and no safety mods.

FWIW, i have all bolt ons (hiFlow cat) and a KDR streeport. I've run both the EFI and PFC with virtually no problems up to 13 psi... only fuel mod is a supra FP. I'm going with 1300 cc injectors however because my duty cycles @ 12 psi are around 95%.

I was running a Pettit Unlimited with a mild streetport, downpipe and intake. It was plenty rich and ran very nicely..actually, I suspect it was a little too rich, but better safe than sorry. Anyway, my Pettit ECU developed a problem turning on the AC (not that I need it right now except when it rains) so I replaced it with a stock ECU while I try to fix it. It doesn't run as well, but its OK...I don't get on it much, but when I do it is still quite rich. I actually find that curious, but its true...even with the stock ECU I am not running even close to lean at WOT.
