AST ??? why

I was searching threads for AST elimination and was wondering why do we need it ?

What are the dangers or possibilities of eliminating it?

One of the best arguments I've heard for keeping it is that it offers a little bit more coolant to help absorb the heat in what some consider to be a marginal cooling system.

Yup. I replaced the plastic one at around 30k miles. It was in perfect condition.
I replaced it with the metal Pettit AST as a precaution. (If I had it to do over,
I'd try to get the all black Tripoint AST, just because I think it looks better. )
I've kept the plastic one in case I ever want to go concours, or something.

I bought my car and the guy had just taken it to RotorSports Racing. It said something on the reciept about replacing the AST, looks like it was just eliminated though, I dont notice any unusual temperatures.

With a radiator that's mounted low, it's a good idea to have a higher-mounted tank with the radiator cap - makes it much easier to get air out of the system. That's really the whole rationale behind it. The FD isn't the only car with an AST, either.

I've had good luck cooling-wise with my AST eliminated, but I will eventually be putting one on the car. The stock AST is an accident waiting to happen, that much is for sure.

I took the ast out when I got the car 10 years ago and the drawback is that it is harder to get the system to burb, but not that hard .I have removed several and no one wants it replaced to date .There are several stored in the garage .

back in the day i brought my car to M2 to have some work done. they removed the AST for me and added the blocking plate. the car started overheating badly, and often. thye said that on a number of cars they would have this same problem (usually 94's and 95's), and couldnt find the cause of the overheating... but when the AST was reinstalled everything would go back to normal. they removed it and everything was fine. anyway, that was what kyle @ M2 told me back in the day ... make of that what you will.
