Don't get the Pettit. The metal is flimsy, and the top will warp. The fitment isnt that good either. I had one, and am glad to be rid of it. The one from Tri Point Engineering is made much better:

Myself and everyone else in Australia just gets the RE Amemiya from RHDjapan. Its a bit expensive but its really good quality and looks awesome.

Just remember to tighten all the fittings before installing or do what i did and removed, applied some good thread paste and reinstalled.

I believe Mazda has redesigned it since the ones that came on the early models. The OEM one should last a long time.

with the greddy and pettit ASTs i have had to sell numerous over the past few years because the cap section warps and the welds crack.

one of the best designed ones i have seen was the Fighter's garage, but they are hit and miss with the quality of their products.. also do not believe they are in business anymore, wonder why.

i'm not sure why it is so difficult to get a decent AST made, if pettit and greddy simply used thicker material it would be a complete non-issue.

I had the Fighters Garage AST. The welds were garbage and the damn thing leaked like a sieve. Even cleaning up the welds was spotty cause they used recycled aluminum on the ASTs.

yeah i remember, but the pics obviously showed a more durable version. i just believe you got one that was made on a friday afternoon. there just doesn't seem to be many easily attainable versions of an aftermarket AST aside from the RE one, which is imported.

i'm not sure what the issue is, there should be plenty of demand for a well made piece, not made out of a used soda can.

Another really cool AST the is Knight Sports one:

http://www.rhdjapan.com/knight-sport...d3s-rx-7-60914

I have had both (bought the KS one to fit with my KS v-mount and sold the RE Amemiya one (which did not fit)) and they are very high quality. Unfortunately, the KS one is pretty much as expensive as the REA one.

I had an early version of the Pettit and the quality was decent but it looked like ***. Apart from the above two ASTs, all the other ones I have seen look like scrap metal welded by a blind man.

Yeah. They're not too hard to make. Probably about 40-50 dollars in materials max.

Then again, I see quality ASTs for hot rods and stuff going for WAY cheaper than the stuff we have available.

and the ironic part is that most of those are made in china.

They seem to work just fine for the hot-rodders. I think making your own is really the best bet if you're gonna stick with the AST setup. I'm still running the AST delete on mine. No need to go back to it.
