Reading this whole thread from start to finish was like a suspense novel!! Change of "characters". Plot twists. Pettit to Fighters to Kinetic. .....Did kinetic find time to make more ASTs? What colors are there? How's that turbo project going? Are they sold out? arggghhhh.....I need to know the ending!

Your pm's are full Kinetic. Please buzz me if you have ASTs available....I'm interested....Thanks.

Make sure the AST has a restrictor at the bottom pipe

Yes. Make sure there is a restrictor otherwise coolant will bypass the main hose and go thru the AST rendering your radiator useless.

Don't believe me? cut open the OEM AST and see.

That replaces your coolant body, not an AST

would you think that the size of the hose to the ast compaired to the radiator hose would provide most of the restriction and also the difference in size between the radiator and ast?

hey guys, i haven't been on the forum since finishing the turbo exhaust/plumbing and just now finished my twin fuel pump system that i started back in 06.

right now i have 3 ast tanks that i just need to weld tabs on and then are ready to go, i can powder coat them in red, satin black, and high temp silver. no lie the bottom nipple on the stock ast really is restricted the hole size is 3/32" (pic below), i can provide a restrictor pill with my tanks if needed.

i couldn't get the focus right but you can see 3/32" opening.

its a tight fit but the rear wastegate dump tube goes around the runner with a bit of room.

pumps in and out of surge tank.

So, how important is it to restrict the flow through the AST, and where would the restrictor go - the inlet or the outlet hose?

I bought a Tri-Point AST a while ago but haven't installed it yet. The bottom fitting is not restricted, although the side (inlet) fitting might be a little narrow. A restrictor was not supplied with the tank.

I don't think the restrictor does much. I bought a Mazdaspeed AST (I don't think they're made any more, or they're at least hard to find) for my project car - no restrictor. I would imagine a part made by Mazda would have the restrictor if it was worthwhile.

BTW, I believe Jimmy just had a batch of AST's made at Fighters Garage.

fighters garage, re-amemiya and mine all use billet filler necks. i think the petit units are the only ones using the stamped tops.

the restrictor is just there to keep coolant flow back to tank at a minimum but i agree with Dale on its usefulness .

for those who still prefer having the restrictor built-in the tank... i got you covered as well
