ast elimination?

was thinknig bout eliminating my ast .. yes ive noticed there has been a huge debate on pros and cons on eliminating or replacing the ast .. some say that the inner workings of the ast is more complex than people believe it to be .. does anyone have any pictures of a gutted ast?

Uh it is a tank with three coolant lines running to it (filler neck, radiator, overflow tank. that is it. Nothing complex about it.

Yep, what Rated R1 said. I still have my stock one installed, plan on going to metal soon.. The major pros and cons are going to metal vs. eliminating, btw.

eliminate don't go to metal ...

I have done this to every FD i have owned and all that I work on. NONE have had any overheating issues and the one i just rebuilt and eliminated the AST, the water temps are 180-190. If someone can argue that those are too high i will give them a cookie!!

It causes NO problems, and the addage that " well the engineers put it on soo they know more than us" is pointless. They did sooo many things to that car that everyone changes that the statement cannot hold water But i am SURE someone will chime in with that sentence..l

And if you do it, do it correctly. I just had all the holes on the WP housing welded over so i don't have ugly hoses with bolts in them hanging off everywhere. Also removed all the heater core plugs on the WP. very clean look. And i will NOT have to worry about keaks from the bolt hoses. just my 2 cents on doing things

also reason why i ask this is cause one thread someone said that they noticed a 5 degree difference in their water temp when the ast position was lowered from original position

Dont eliminate it. everyonce in a while i get air in my system because I have no ast. This causes air blocks and it over heats untill i run it with the cap off to get the air out.

http://members.aol.com/rotoryhead/rx7/paintedengine6

lower heater and turbo coolant nipples.

upper turbo coolant and rats nest nipples. also air pump mounting ears ground off.

If you cannot see these PM me your email. i will send them to whomever would like them. and then they can post them up correctly if desired

And yes! I am putting stainless OMP lines before i start drving the car. It is easy to swap when single turbo. about 20 minutes

And on my current FD which i have had for 4 years. single turbo the whole time and AST removed the whole time. I *never* overheated or had a loss of coolant. It just takes a little while longer to get the system bled when refilling from a change.
