Is anything wrong with my dashpot from this picture?

My car has been stalling when i come to a stop in gear with the clutch pedal down. Wonder if it is my dashpot that is causing the problem. Can you guys tell if anything is wrong with this? I adjusted the dashpot to as close to the lever as possible but it still does not touch. I read in another post that it is supposed to touch? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The picture doesn't really show but there is still a small gap.

looks like it needs cleaning. the white rod on the tip should extend 1/4 of an inch. your's looks like it's about half that ~ 1/8. Gunk and stuff gets inside them and will prevent it from operating correctly.

Remove it and spray it with some carb cleaner.

If memory serves me correctly it should engage at 2800 rpms (might be 2300). Have a friend get inside the car and rev the car up to that number and that is where it should make initial contact. It will probably fix your problem as the dashpot is intended to let the throttle come to a more graceful close during de-acceleration thus preventing stalling like you describe.

Your dashpot is out of adjustment, as stated above. Adjust it per the FSM. I was thinking it should start touching the throttle stop at around 1700 rpm, but that could be wrong.

You should also check your clutch switch.

The dash pot does not touch at all. Even when I had someone rev up the car, the tip never touched. It touched a little after throttle was released. How do I know if I need a new dashpot?

As for extending 1/4 inch, mine does not come out as far as the one you have pictured. I'll try to clean it and adjust it.

I had the same problem, whenever i'm in gear and clutch my car would stall. So i read some of the old post. I was debating either the dashpoint and clutch switch. I started with the clutch switch, and it took me 5mins replaced the old, plus it only cost me $20. The result finally cured my stalling my problem. That's my 2 cents, good luck!

the clutch switch could also cause similar problems. I'd clean the dashpot and see if that cures the issue. If not go to the clutch switch. I rechecked the contact with the dashpot should be at 2800 rpms.

You should just clean it. I think a new dashpot will run you about 150.00! Just clean it. ... it might not even be the problem.

Go purchase a 3.00 can of carb cleaner and spray it down. Then work the white rod in and out by pressing it. It'll clean up. They SELDOM fail. They will gum up though.

Alright I'll try that. So I'll just buy the clutch switch.
