I sold 25 sets of AWS block off plates quite a while back ('99-00?) and no one reported a check engine light. I've also removed the system from several cars with no light.
It isn't really much of a "mod", I took mine off because I didn't like dealing with the AWS hose on the TB elbow.
If you start the car with the shifter in gear (clutch in) the AWS will be cancelled, if you blip the throttle once it'll also cancel it so no biggie. I believe the PFC does not support AWS so if you have a PFC no need to keep the AWS.

Edit: Directly from their sites:
UNPLUGGING THE ASW SOLENOID ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR
Yes, unplugging the ASW solenoid valve's electrical connector will disable the ASW system but will also cause the "Check Engine" light to come on. That's the reason no one does it this way.

scuderiaciriani is a great site but most of the info is from the "big list" days. To understand what the "big list" was like years ago go over to the RX8 club and look around. The owners were learning, some of the info they thought they learned was wrong.
I am about to do this, since I have a greddy elbow, with no nipple to keep the AWS. . .I don't think I'll miss it.
I have everything out right now. . .what's the best way to remove the AWS system. I went to the website to order the block-off plates, and there's one for the pipe, and one for the valve. Where the heck's the valve??
Should I remove the solenoid also since I have the rats nest out. What do I do with the plug and vacuum lines once I remove the solenoid?
Any help would be appreciated.
