My car is still in the shop - it's been 5 weeks wrong. I"m not worried about the engine blowing as I am about getting another boost leak and having to take it back again. I worry about not having the car to drive, not the cost of fixing it. I have a daily driver (Ford Lightning).

I'm worried because the next time it breaks, if it breaks within the next 3 months, I'm going to sell it and by an '01 911 Turbo and have my monthly payment go from $2xx to $1,xxx a month.

That does get me from time to time. If I stop at a light, change the radio station or volume and all of a sudden I hear a massive exhaust leak or smell fuel or something.

Then I realize it's the junker beside me.

As to the original topic, no I don't worry much. There's no fun in worrying, and since I'm not pushing my boost very much (in fact for autox'ing and track days I pull the plugs and run 8psi), I have very little to worry about.

if you dont want to pay to play get a different toy. all rx-7s are alot of time and money regaurdless of what you do.

its the love of the car and the powerplant that makes it famous.

Hey all,

I admit, I'm mecahnicallly-declined when it comes to building engines/big engine work/etc so my biggest concern is not the money that goes into fixing the FD as I can afford the rebuild and labor...it's just WHERE I have to go to have it rebuilt/install a new engine at that is reputable...I'm in central Florida and the closes I believe are RP of Texas and Pettit Racing down south of me which is several, several hundred miles away. The positive side is that once the engine is out...I can start fresh new engine have the engine bay completely cleaned/etc.

Other than that...my 2nd fear is just drivers driving/parking around me...some crazy people out there driving that somehow got a license to drive.

There are risks to owning FDs but those are outweighed by being an ownership of an FD, period. There is really no other car out there right now (2000+). If I did, it would be a '90s car like an '94 MR2 Turbo or....a '94-'95 FD!

This is the thing...replace the powerplant and it is no longer a lot of time and money...it much more time spent enjoying the car... And your previous comment about weight balance being off by putting in the LS1 is an uninformed comment.

I think the styling and chassis is what makes this car sought after. The rotary is unique and enginious. However, it is the car's achillies heal. It is the reason these cars sell for 30% less than a Supra. If the LS1 was Mazda designed and came in the car stock, I bet our cars would hold value above the Supra and comparable Japanese supercars of the day. The fact that engine is an American "low tech" design and that it bastardizes the car is what keeps those LS1 RX7's value within sight of the comparable rotary equiped cars.

I may take flames for saying that but it's true.

The rotary is inherently smoother in its power delivery, but there is only so much someone is willing to pay and put up with. The fact that we constantly see threads about being scared to floor the car and track drive it are a consistant reminder.

I understand that some of you have had luck with the rotary, on the track and off...and that some of you get good mileage out of an engine. But 50K miles between rebuilds on a 400whp engine is pretty ridiculous. We should be getting twice that.

With all the problems I have had with my car and for how long it has been down getting the engine/turbo systems rebuilt I will be pretty scared about beating on it when I get it back....but then again....after this engine is gone...LS1 for me! Let the beating begin! I hope it surprises me with its longevity cause it is most certainly going to see some track time!

I agree with Mahjik... bought an FD new in 93 when they first came available and tracked to **** out of it in SoCal for 3 years (and two engines). Bought my current one little over three year's ago (mid-life crisis LOL), now dropping an LS2 in it since the last motor went bye-bye in August. I don't hate the rotary (in fact as engineer I'm impressed with the performance Mazada eeked out of a 1.3 liter motor) I just wanted to build something a little different .

BTW - the soul of a sports car is not in the what type motor sits in the bay or the type of chassis/suspension it uses, it's in the passion the person has driving car.
