Anybody use Sylvania SilverStar lights?

I'd like to upgade the bulb for my headlights, but don't want to spend the money on HID's right now. Anybody try the Sylvania Silverstar lights? They advertise a brightness close to HID.

I was considering the Cool Blues also. One of the things I don't like about the stock lights is the yellowish color. The Cool Blues would be an improvement then.

Go get 'em right now and let us know. The stock bulbs are absolutely the worst thing about my car.

Why can't anyone come up with good headlights for ANY car for under a grand? Is this rocket science or what?

(although the headlights on my wife's new 2002 Honda CRV are pretty darn good. I think it's all in the reflectors though........)

I've always wanted a "high end, crisp, clean, dramatic look" in my headlights. Very important.

Will match my tails, ya'know

You can do better than that at just about any chain auto parts store. Both Checker and AutoZone now stock them. They both had a price of $19.95 each.

Checker gave you a $10 gift card to spend with them,
Auto Zone was a straight $10 rebate (cash)

I always go for the $. Both are mail in coupons.

They are absolutely excellent, but you want to spend a little time accurately aiming your headlights to take advantage of them. I can almost guarantee you that 99% of the FD3S's out there have never aimed their headlights since leaving the factory, hence everyone bitching about the stock units.

I tried a lot of different bulbs to brighten up the head lights and all they did was change the color. I finally bought some made by PIAA and they are by far the best I have used. They are about $50.00 per bulb Canadian, so expect about $30.-35 US. I can't remember what the line is called, but PM me if you have trouble finding them and need more info.

I run them and like them. I've run others but like these the best so far. I also upgraded parking light bulbs to a 7 watt halogen, instead of the 5 watt 194 bulbs. I can't remember the part number, but its just a tad bit smaller than the 194 size and just did fit. They were out of 194's and I got to looking around and discovered they might fit, so I went for it. I wanted my hjeadlights, fog lights and running lights to match in color (Whiteness) and got what I wanted. Looks ten times better.

They are an excellent price. There's a few guys using those.

I am running the PIAA Super Plasma GT HID and those are the brightest! Sylvania is rated at 4000k and the GT's are 5000k, the same color spectrum as high end HID's. They have a slight purple tint but only noticable if you stare at them and go blind. The bulbs are purple. They don't seem more powerful, just a better, clearer light. The beam pattern still sucks though. When on high beams they are just as powerful as HID's. Maybe I could tilt them down and run high beam all the time?

i have them. i got them extremely cheap since i kinda worked there at one time. it was a PROMOTIONAL usage thing i was doing. i had to use them to tell customers what they were like. didnt want to lie about it. better than any other bulb that can be bought at a parts store, but i hear the PIAA's are the best short of the real thing. not bad and get rid of the ugly yellow and stupi blue colors.

Headlight Alignment

I am about to install a pair of Sylvania Siverstar 9003ST bulbs and
will report on my experience on their lighting characterists as
compared to the stock bulbs.

But before I make the swap I am trying to figure out how to
judge the aignment. My SAAB came with a diagram for
aligning headlights against a wall. I have found no such
information for the RX-7. Anyone have any ideas?

I installed a pair of them in my mother-in-laws bimmer. The amount of light is good. No complaints there. But, for some reason, the color of the light (left versus the right) was slightly different. One of them was a little more "yellow" or "natural" compared to the other one. I thought it was the perception from my eyes, but I tested it, and sure enough,...the color is slightly different.

Just something that I noticed w/ my pair of Sylvanias. The slight color difference might be an isolated incident. (Sylvania is one of the two biggest names in lighting).

I'm running these (silverstars). They are brighter than stock halogens, but not enough. I know I'm going to kill some animals this spring for sure 'cause I can't see!

My beam patter was messed up because the previous owner was crosseyed! and because the bulbs were upside down.

Hey, I just put Silverstars in my other car and DEFINITELY feel I lost a little over $40! Read what its wattage is rated at, and don't buy into the "makes 55 watts appear to be 100 watts"! What a load of crap! Trust me on this one (I learn the hard way with just about everything)...find some bulbs that are higher in wattage. I read somewhere that most factory wires can deal with the heat of lights with a wattage of up to around 90. I finally learned of this and got some higher wattage bulbs...very nice! I don't think any of them will ever be as bright as what they would look with clear lenses though. But they definitely are brighter. Regardless, I'd definitely stay away from the Silverstars.

Headlight Alignment

Thanks for the all input on Silverstars and other options.

But what about the alignment issue? As I posted earlier, before I
make a swap (with any bulb) I am trying to figure out how to
judge the alignment. My SAAB came with a diagram for
aligning headlights against a wall. I have found no such
information for the RX-7. Anyone have any ideas on how
to judge the alignment?

Thanks for any help.

In the Ghetto mod world, we park on flat ground with a wall in front of us. Measure the height from the center of your headlight to the ground. Then measure the center of the light on the wall. When they are the same, your headlights are straight out. You probably want them to angle down slightly. This as also usefull to make sure they are even.

Oh yeah, do this at night.

..........in the ghetto.........
