Well if you feel uncomfortable about getting rid of it, id suggest you replace it with an aftermarket aluminum one.The reason why people decide to bypass it is because:

(1 its cheaper
(2 its one less part on the vehicle that can fail, therefore making the car more reliable

The disadvantage is that it will be much harder to bleed the system of air. The air separation tank is designed to separate air bubbles from the cooling system. But if you really know what you're doing, and how to properly bleed the system, this shouldnt be a problem.

I would suggest to replace it instead of bypass it because in my opinion, it IS there for a reason. The one I went with is a "Fighters Garage AST" http://www.fighters-garage.com/rx7.html hope this helps you with your decision.

I was fairly hard core about not getting rid of it but I've ran a car without it for about 4 years now with no problems. Last time I replaced the coolant I think I had to jack up the passenger side to get the bubbles out.

Hey just to add my opinion, I had the ast last year removed and tap up the collant no issues, but last week I had removed filler neck to tap it for Spa guages sender. When I finshed my little project I had to tap up my coolant because what I drain to removed my filler neck, anyway I had it tap up perfect. I deceide to startup the car and let it warm up next thing I notice car start to rev up and down and buzzer beeping like crazy. I could not open the filler cap because coalant comes out from, then I notice my exhaust manifold is cherry red, I shut the car off, and turn the fan on to cool down eveything, make a long story short engine was not sucking coolant from the resvior tank? I have to investigate to see why? I have to deceide to removed the throttle body hose and then retap the filler neck and start the car to get the extra air out and it work.

You either have a small coolant leak, leak on your puke tank return hose, or you didn't properly burp it, none of which are faults of doing an AST removal.
