Now that the exhaust side of my engine is sorted, the other side is my main power sapper and I figure it's time I got around to replacing the stock airbox. Do you learned fellows have opinions on what's floating around out there?

I really like Pettit as a shop and most of their products. However, their intake IMO is old fashioned and expensive for what it is...

 

I'm going with the fighters garage intake.

 

auto exe (as stated above) and the old M2 air box are the only two carbon fiber intakes that i can think of, but the auto exe is expensive and the original M2 air box is hard to find, there are a couple of companies that make aluminum replicas of the M2. but keep your eye out in the for sale section, they show up every once in a while.

as far as the pettit TKT kit and the fighters garage kit, both companies make good products, but these kits arent really a true CAIs, hot air from the engine can come in from behind the heat shield as it is just open. that heat shield will work well to keep hot air from the radiator out, but the hottest thing in the engine bay is that big hot turbo manifold sitting right behind it. there are better options out there in that price range.

If you want a cold air intake that works really well, modify your stock airbox. If looks, and spending lots of money, are more important to you than performance, there are several aftermarket products listed in the posts above.

anyway, the two carbon fiber intake boxes are the Aut-Exe & the M2. personally I have the M2 and it works great. the auto-exe usually has to be imported unless you can find a used a used one in the classifieds (good luck...) and M2 is has been out of business for awhile, so your best bet is also to watch the classifieds section.

i just don't see a point on an aftermarket intake on stock twins. the stock airbox may be quiet but it's not particularly restrictive, and it actually ducts in cold air

 

Space for a SMIC, FMIC piping, etc. We still install those things also.

 

for the money you would probably spend on a carbon fiber intake, just pick up the pfs intake/intercooler in the for sale threads.

Stock airbox only pulls in air by pirating from the IC duct, unless you modify it, and it's large, so restricts the size of the IC you can use.

 

also i think someone discovered that at higher rpm the stock airbox ducting actually sucks hot air from the engine bay through the IC, doing the opposite of what is supposed to happen.

Yes, it is A LOT of money but IMO you get what you pay for with this item. I have the Pettit intake and while it works fine, it is very uneasy on the eyes and incredibly overpriced for two intakes, two pipes and two heatshields that cost less then $75. MS also made a cf intake which had a MSRP of about $1500 (not a typo)...

 

i have the auto exe intake kit but im going single so wil be seling soon. got to say it is an excellent intake kit and imo the best looking by miles

 

Man, prices vary wildly on these. Any tips to help me find the lowest one?
