For getting a fast start off the line, have you ever neutral dropped all the way to 'L' while in hold mode? If you have, how high were you revved? Did your tires spin smoothly or hop (or did they even spin)?
I just want to see if someone else has before I try it.

thats just dumb! DONT DO IT! a friend of mine did.. and the torque converor shot thru the floorboard almost killing him!

the only way to go is get a tranny cooler and cool the fluid. Then apply the gas and brake @ the same time.... tahts the only way! And dont do it often.. Let the fluid cool down!

I did this once with my FD when I first got it (dumb) and again one other time on accident in traffic.

The tires spun my turbo engaged and it took off so fast my head snapped back...but like 40 feet down the road it slowed down...I guess the auto tranny went to shift to second and disengaged the turbo's once my RPM's went back down. Its one of those things that does way more harm then good.

Want2Race:

ALL auto FD's come stock with 2 stage tranny coolers - the fluid first goes thru one in bottom tank of the rad then thru one located on the pass side where the r-1 oil cooler would be.

Drop shifting is a BAD IDEA IT will scramble your TQ Conv. in a hurry - the best thing to do for better launches (beyond Hold-L and Torque Braking) is get an upgraded RACE Torque Converter.

Just a BAD PLAN unless you are looking to replace the automatic with a manual. NUTHIN' in the drivetrain is built to withstand those kinds of stresses more than a couple of times

Neutral drops in any stock A/T are a bad idea.

I agree with the rest of the posts. I was working/fixed on a auto FD. When test driving it from a stop it felt very slow compared to the 5-speed.

What about a shift kit? Don't they have a good shift kit to make the rx7 automatic shift harder and faster
You can also get a better tranny cooler when you install that

Unfortunately the Rx-7 uses the same shitty R4A-EL tranny, which is also found in the Mazda 929 and MPV Minivan.

So aftermarket support is severly limited. There are a few places that will do Torque converter upgrades and valve jobs, but thats about it.

I'd like to see what the FD could do with a real A/T like a TH400/C6/Supra A/T

Actually, a th-400, or c-6 would slow the car down worse yet, poor first gear ratios, no OD and the units are heavy. However, I would like to see a built 200-4r in one of these, there are plenty of convertors available, and thanks to the Turbo buicks, the knowledge to make these units hold up is widespread. Many, many 3500+ Lb turbo buicks go 12's, 11,'s on 200-4r's. And it's relativly small, and not too heavy.

Not that I want an automatic but I like to know all the specs about the rx7
I just can't have an automatic. in my opinion manual makes the car but if that is what you have it's okay and some people like it better
I know girls love when a guy is driving a manual unless they know how to also
Now manuals come with a 4.10 final gear ratio and I know automatics are different what do they come with?
I know it is lower but it would make more sense to me since you guys said its slow from a start to upgrade to 4.33s or something.
Also how many speeds is the auto transmission and I'm guessing it has an overdrive also.
Have any of you guys tried moving it down to 1st 2nd or 3nd gear if you have those shown and then switch it when you have to while you are racing?

If you want to race do it right and get a racing torque converter with a higher stall. If your running a 3000rpm stall it would probably be pretty good. That way you can tach it up and get boost off the line.

What your talking about is going to break **** and cost a ton of $, just spend the money in the begining and dont worry about it.

Later,
STEPHEN

Wow, brings back those newbie days for me (unless I'm still in them). I've decided that I'm going to do a tranny swap or just get a Base w/ 5-spd depending on how much money I'm making when I'm through with college and have settled in.
