I've searched, but are there any aftermarket oil filters with the anti-drainback valves? Or would I be okay without it? I was hoping I wouldn't have to order these from mazda.

 

On the FD, it would be very difficult to mount a filter in an area where water would be a concern.

I read that it doesn't really matter Merlin. I remember a debate about whether to pre-fill the oil filter or not. I assume you are asking due to concern over a gap in time between start up and when the oil filter fills and starts pushing fresh oil again? I believe in the debate over pre-fill or no pre-fill, it was pointed out that the oil not held in the filter falls to a reservior. Suction occurs from this reservior, and before all the oil is pulled from there, fresh oil is being passed through the filter to replace.... I could be remembering incorrectly, so it wouldn't hurt to have other opinions before making a decision.

 

How can you fill the filter with oil when it mounts face down? I normally use STP filters. They have the anti-drain valve. Also, if you can still find them, Motorcraft has one with the anti-drain valve. The Ford Probe uses the same oil filter as the RX7 (all Mazdas, for that matter).

 

I've been a fan of the K&N's quality products. K&N part # HP 1004, About a 3rd larger than OEM, a drain back valve and a well built filter. The relief valve pressure is a little lower than OEM but than shouldn't matter as long as it's changed regularly.

 

Wow, I totally read that wrong. But yes, for the most part, just about every oil filter that I've come across has an anti-drainback valve.

 

I used to allways use Mobil1 but now I use Purolater Pure1 (for 1/2 the $) but i've also used K&N which is hardest to find. The K&N has a nut thing so you can loosen it with a socket wrench but the stup thing is SAE and all my tools are metric and it's also a bit larger. All of those have the anti drain back didly and I fill them with oil before mounting without any problems. When I did my reasearch along time ago those were all rated pretty close except for K&N was 3rd because it didn't screen as fine but it allowed for alot more oil flow.

 

Ok good, I've got the purolater pure1 on as well, I just didn't think to check before putting it on.

 

I use only Mazda filters, and wouldn't ever put anything else on my baby.

 

Even with the antidrainback didly, there will be some spillage. Not too much though and you can wipe it down while you are under there reinstalling the oil pan plug. At least wipe off the spark plug wires and oil pressure sensor. I put my finger over the hole holding the oil in the filter as long as I can untill I feel the stud it goes on to. At that point yeah, some will spill but very little. It takes a while (forgot exactly how long) to fill the filter with oil if dry so it's best to put oil in it so the engine doesn't start dry for too long.

 

I usually allow my car to sit at least 24 hours before I change my oil. That allows any oil in the filter to drain completely. For those that use theirs as a daily driver may not be able to go 24 hours without driving.

AFAIK Purolator also makes the OEM oil filter for Mazda.
