The drivers side door (and the pass door for that matter) on my FD make lots of noise. They have since the day I bought the car. The plastic pieces rub against one another.

Well... today I decided to do something about it. I took the drivers side door off, and took all of the plastic parts apart carefully.

My current plan is to reassemble all of it by adjusting some of the metal brackets to make it fit better. Along with doing this, I am also planning on using some form of insulation on the plastic pieces to make sure they do not rub against each other. Obviously I'm not going to stop them from moving ever so slightly, so this is the next best way I can think of. My first thought is to use some gasket maker since it dries in a rubbery form. Unfortuanatly, that rubbery form I think would soon wear out and the noises would begin again. I'm sure there is something better out there to use.

So... down to the point of this post. What would be a good insulator that wouldnt soon wear out that I could buy?

There is felt tape available. If you can't find any at you local parts store, let me know. We use this at work with no problems (Benz dealership).

 

TTT, any other ideas? (the one mentioned was actually a pretty good idea I think)

 

I have put small pieces of rope caulk in a few places in my car to eliminate the plastic squeaking. The caulk never dries and stays sticky yet can be easily removed from the part is need be. On my car the little cup around the interior passenger door release was especially bad. Never makes a peep now

 

felt tape is the best option. get it at craft stores.

Success!

I made my way to "Hobby Lobby" today where they sell Sheets of "Sticky Felt" for .99 cents, which is felt with a sticky backing. I cut strips off of the sheet and lined all of the plastic pieces that touch other plastic pieces with the felt. I then put the door back together. I can now pull, push, and do anything to the door and it makes NO NOISE.

On a side note, while I had the door apart I took the metal piece that makes the bin slam shut and bent it slightly. (do this while the metal is OFF, else you will probably break some 10+ yr old plastic) I bent it just enough to where the bin no longer SLAMS shut like it used to. (it used to slam so hard I was afraid it would break the lid one day) It now still shuts, but not with a loud "WHAM!" like it used to. Just a nice lite "thunk". I now have no fear of this thing breaking. Its something I highly reccomend given that the things are known to break on our FD's. I'm sure the hard WHAM is the reason for it.
